Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) and Toshiba Solutions Corporation today announced that they have started to demonstrate a home energy monitoring system and community management system (CMS) in the Lyon redevelopment area in Lyon, France. The demonstration is a part of the Lyon Confluence Smart Community Demonstration Project developed by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), with support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The project is a key element of the Lyon Confluence program organized by the Grand Lyon Community a major redevelopment program for a former industrial and transportation hub in central Lyon, on the lower end of the peninsular formed by the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers.
The home energy monitoring system demonstration will measure real-time use of electricity, water and gas by installing measuring equipment in distribution boards and water and gas meters in public apartment houses in the redevelopment area. Measured data will be visualized on tablets distributed to the residents. The tablets will also show the power consumption of individual home appliances*1 and provide advice on ways to save energy, as a means to enhance the residents’ awareness of the environment and to encourage them to reduce energy use. The effects of these efforts will be verified.
Starting with the home energy monitoring system and an electric vehicle
sharing system that uses solar energy to recharge vehicles, initiated in
October 2013 as another part of the renovation program, the CMS
demonstration will collect data and visualize total energy usage in the
development area, to support development of a smart community. Data from
the Positive Energy Building (PEB*2) project will be added
when it is completed in spring 2015, as will data from other buildings
in the redevelopment area. Toshiba Group will analyze energy usage data
and share it with Grand Lyon Community, which will determine whether it
can be reflected in the redevelopment plan or strategies for achieving
improved energy efficiency.
The Lyon Confluence Smart Community Demonstration Project is NEDO’s first demonstration project in Europe and it targets achievement of the EU’s 2020 environmental targets, "20-20-20*3", five years earlier than the 2020 target year, including achieving zero emissions in the redevelopment area. The project is utilizing technologies that Japanese companies have developed as a means to help to achieve high level energy efficiency, and Toshiba Group is the coordinator of the Japanese companies involved in the project.
Going forward, Toshiba and Toshiba Group will utilize the outcomes of the project to refine technologies that will create extended Smart Communities, and proactively seek to expand global business by cooperating with governments and autonomous bodies.
|*1||Measured by distribution board basis.|
|*2||PEB: Buildings that generates more energy from renewable energy sources than they consume.|
|*3||The EU targets a 20% reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels, a 20% improvement in energy efficiency, and raising the share of energy consumption produced from renewable resources to 20%. The target date is 2020.|
Four Tasks under Lyon Confluence Smart Community Demonstration Project
|Task 1||Construction of Positive Energy Buildings (PEB) that generate more energy from renewable energy sources than they consume. These will use solar energy and a smart battery system based on Toshiba’s SCiB™ rechargeable batteries.||May 2015|
|Task 2||Introduction of an energy management system for a photovoltaic power generation system and an electric vehicle car sharing program.||Oct. 2013|
|Task 3||Introduction of a home energy monitoring system that visualizes energy consumption, to promote greater awareness among residents of usage patterns and reduced use.||Jun. 2014|
|Task 4||Introduction of a CMS that collects energy information from the measures promoted in Tasks 1 to 3; visualizes total energy usage in the community to support realization of a smart community in the development area.||Jun. 2014|

In high-production environments where release cycles are measured in hours or minutes — not days or weeks — there's little room for mistakes and no room for confusion. Everyone has to understand what's happening, in real time, and have the means to do whatever is necessary to keep applications up and running optimally. DevOps is a high-stakes world, but done well, it delivers the agility and performance to significantly impact business competitiveness.

The major cloud platforms defy a simple, side-by-side analysis. Each of the major IaaS public-cloud platforms offers their own unique strengths and functionality. Options for on-site private cloud are diverse as well, and must be designed and deployed while taking existing legacy architecture and infrastructure into account. Then the reality is that most enterprises are embarking on a hybrid cloud strategy and programs. In this Power Panel at 15th Cloud Expo (http://www.CloudComputingExpo.com...
