New Study Finds TV is Hot During Summer; Now Considered a Hobby and Even Prioritized During Vacations

For millions, summer is about barbeques, baseball, swimming, travel and the great outdoors. However, in a recent omnibus survey* commissioned by Roku Inc., TV now tops the list of summertime activities. When asked what they do on summer days, 60 percent of consumers answered that they watch their favorite TV show, followed by read (47 percent), shop (33 percent), jog or hike (19 percent) and attend a sporting event (16 percent). In fact, 80 percent of respondents reported that they have chosen to stay in and watch their favorite TV shows on a nice summer day, with 43 percent admitting to even making up an excuse to do so – people age 18-24 stand out as the biggest fibbers.

In this “golden age” of TV, Americans embrace the culture of watching TV whenever they want. With the accessibility and choice that streaming provides, consumers can watch TV more easily than ever before.

Now, TV is considered a hobby just like attending sporting events, shopping, reading and exercising. Almost two-thirds (66 percent) of people revealed that they equate watching TV to a recreational or leisure activity. Valued so much that even though consumers travel in the summer to escape their routines, they keep to their TV schedules. Ninety-two percent of people said they stay current with their favorite TV show when traveling while some use the trip to catch up on a TV show or series they’ve previously started watching.

“Summer was once considered an entertainment lull since popular TV shows took hiatus,” said Matthew Anderson, chief marketing officer at Roku. “Streaming has changed that and now consumers have an enormous library of entertainment at their fingertips no matter what time of year. It’s no wonder that despite great weather outside, great TV beckons people and excites them about enjoying time indoors too.”

Roku kicked off a Summer of Endless Streaming sweepstakes today that celebrates watching TV and gives consumers the chance to win dozens of prizes. Visit the Roku Facebook page for details.
