Legal Leaders for Diversity to Fund Scholarships for Law Students With Disabilities

MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 06/17/14 -- The Legal Leaders for Diversity announced today that they have established the Legal Leaders for Diversity Trust Fund. This Fund aims to provide equal access to a legal education and to advance diversity in law faculties by offering annual scholarships to support disabled youth who are studying law in Canada. The announcement was made during the third annual meeting of Legal Leaders for Diversity, being held at First Canadian Place in Toronto, the Headquarters for BMO Financial Group, which is a founding member of the Council.

"As legal leaders in Canada, we are duty-bound not only to advocate for greater inclusion, but also to act to generate the positive impact we want to see in our businesses and communities," said Me Daniel Desjardins, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Corporate Social Responsibility Chairman, Bombardier Inc. "By fostering greater inclusion, we are securing the profitability and sustainability of our organizations and the communities in which we do business. Through the Legal Leaders for Diversity Trust Fund, the lives of our beneficiaries will be forever changed, and in turn, so will the future of the field that has offered us tremendous learning, success and reward."

"Law students and lawyers with disabilities still face barriers in accessing and remaining in the legal profession. It's important that we do our part to encourage private firms to invest in this talented pool of students and professionals because the work we do today will have a direct and positive impact on the companies where we work and on the shape of the Canadian workforce", said Simon Fish, General Counsel, BMO Financial Group.

The scholarships will provide financial assistance to students with physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments for undergraduate or graduate studies in Canadian law faculties. From 2014-2015, up to eight scholarships ranging from a minimum of $3,000 to a maximum of $5,000 will be awarded per academic year, for a total amount of up to $25,000. To date, $210,000 have been raised thanks to the generosity of 42 general counsel and managing partners representing corporations and law firms from coast to coast, who each committed to give $5,000 to the Trust Fund.

One of the biggest impacts of the Internet of Things is and will continue to be on data; specifically data volume, management and usage. Companies are scrambling to adapt to this new and unpredictable data reality with legacy infrastructure that cannot handle the speed and volume of data. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Don DeLoach, CEO and president of Infobright, will discuss how companies need to rethink their data infrastructure to participate in the IoT, including: Data storage: Understand...
Since 2008 and for the first time in history, more than half of humans live in urban areas, urging cities to become “smart.” Today, cities can leverage the wide availability of smartphones combined with new technologies such as Beacons or NFC to connect their urban furniture and environment to create citizen-first services that improve transportation, way-finding and information delivery. In her session at @ThingsExpo, Laetitia Gazel-Anthoine, CEO of Connecthings, will focus on successful use c...
Sensor-enabled things are becoming more commonplace, precursors to a larger and more complex framework that most consider the ultimate promise of the IoT: things connecting, interacting, sharing, storing, and over time perhaps learning and predicting based on habits, behaviors, location, preferences, purchases and more. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Tom Wesselman, Director of Communications Ecosystem Architecture at Plantronics, will examine the still nascent IoT as it is coalescing, includin...
The true value of the Internet of Things (IoT) lies not just in the data, but through the services that protect the data, perform the analysis and present findings in a usable way. With many IoT elements rooted in traditional IT components, Big Data and IoT isn’t just a play for enterprise. In fact, the IoT presents SMBs with the prospect of launching entirely new activities and exploring innovative areas. CompTIA research identifies several areas where IoT is expected to have the greatest impac...
Wearable devices have come of age. The primary applications of wearables so far have been "the Quantified Self" or the tracking of one's fitness and health status. We propose the evolution of wearables into social and emotional communication devices. Our BE(tm) sensor uses light to visualize the skin conductance response. Our sensors are very inexpensive and can be massively distributed to audiences or groups of any size, in order to gauge reactions to performances, video, or any kind of present...

Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn’t actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. Operational Hadoop and the Lambda Architecture for Streaming Data Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and fast incoming streams of data. DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, it is now feasible to create a rich desktop and tuned mobile experience with a single codebase, without compromising performance or usability.

Application metrics, logs, and business KPIs are a goldmine. It’s easy to get started with the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana) – you can see lots of people coming up with impressive dashboards, in less than a day, with no previous experience. Going from proof-of-concept to production tends to be a bit more difficult, unfortunately, and it tends to gobble up our attention, time, and money. In his session at DevOps Summit, Otis Gospodnetić, co-author of Lucene in Action and founder...
The speed of software changes in growing and large scale rapid-paced DevOps environments presents a challenge for continuous testing. Many organizations struggle to get this right.
