SUNNYVALE, CA and SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (Marketwired) -- 06/18/14 -- Ayla Networks, the pioneer in agile platforms for the Internet of Things (IoT), is providing the underlying secure connectivity and cloud data services for Owlet's Smart Sock, the world's first wearable baby monitor for consumers that transmits information like heart rate, sleep quality, blood oxygen and skin temperature to a parent's smartphone or other device.
Owlet's Smart Sock is designed give active information on a baby's health and well-being to parents and caregivers. The Smart Sock is a soft, wearable sock that nonetheless contains an LED and other electronics that gather vital data through pulse oximetry, the same techniques employed in hospital monitoring systems. Data and alerts are securely transmitted to parents or caregivers via Ayla's end-to-end platform. Also, Ayla's enterprise-class security capabilities protect data throughout the Owlet solution, giving their customers peace of mind.
Owlet investigated several different IoT platform vendors and even contemplated building its own IoT infrastructure, but chose Ayla because it was the only company that met Owlet's strict criteria for robust wireless connectivity and alert notification, data management, security, and scalable economics.
Ayla's strategic relationships with leading wireless chip and module vendors helps make its IoT platform the most robust solutions on the market. With Ayla, device makers like Owlet can design products quickly and scale production quickly -- all without having to worry about interoperability and reliability issues.
"We want to give new parents everywhere peace of mind. They can see how their baby is doing whether they are in the next room or at work," said Kurt Workman, Owlet's founder and CEO. "Ayla was instrumental in helping us achieve our goal of making sure parents can depend on our product. As well, using Ayla actually costs us less than doing it all ourselves."
Demand for Owlet's Smart Sock has far exceeded the company's expectations, leading to a new round of funding earlier this year. The Smart Sock goes into full production later this year.
Ayla is providing all types of device makers -- from IoT startups to Fortune 100 manufacturers -- with the first truly agile platform for the Internet of Things. Ayla achieves its high degree of flexibility through a seamless fabric of interconnected software, including embedded agents for devices, cloud-based back-end infrastructure and services, and intelligent application libraries. Device makers use Ayla in their IoT product developments to be faster, cheaper, and to reduce risk.
Ayla has collaborated with leading IoT chip and module companies such as Broadcom, STMicroelectronics, USI, NXP Semiconductor and Murata Americas to deliver device-side hardware components complete with software fully compatible with Ayla's cloud that can be purchased in volume through distribution. Ayla has also designed its cloud infrastructure to accommodate a large number of diverse devices simultaneously, making it easy to add and change devices.
By adopting Ayla's technology, product development teams of any project size can develop faster and cheaper, knowing Ayla's reliability and performance will enhance their customer's experience. Ayla's platform is open, compatible with the widest possible variety of communication standards, cloud APIs, and OSes. Enterprise-class security is assured through multi-layer authentication, encryption, and policy-based access control managed through Ayla's cloud services and advanced operational portals.
Built-in analytics enable real-time learning and a device firmware upgrade manager allows manufacturers to quickly react to this learning and modify their products deployed in the field. Enterprise-class support tools give customer service teams the visibility to drill-down on devices, users, and data.
The company is collaborating with SINA, the world's largest Chinese language portal, and a number of established U.S. manufacturers on connected products. Ayla has also announced plans to build an IoT cloud to serve customers in China.
"It is a great feeling to collaborate with a company like Owlet, which is pioneering a new segment of connected wearables that will improve people's wellness," said Dave Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Ayla Networks. "By taking care of the infrastructure for the Internet of Things, Ayla is able to free up resources at companies like Owlet so they can better focus on their differentiated value and overall customer experience."
