Mobile technology and new social engagement platforms are challenging educational institutions to adapt to changing expectations and new norms in learning both in K-12 education and higher learning. Investments in STEM education, and now STEAM education (STEM + Art), are also driving educators and corporate trainers to reassess the choices they have in technology and systems. Futuresource recently reported that the global spend on education technology within classrooms reached $13 billion last year, up 11% on 2012, and is expected to reach $19 billion by 2018. K-12 public schools are working with technology companies, including Apple, Cisco and Google, and many startups to integrate the use of technology in the classroom.
A recent study of college students conducted by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that active learning, or “engagement learning” increases test scores and decreases failing grades in undergraduate STEM courses.
