Investing in Aboriginal Day Live & Celebration in Winnipeg

Minister Glover announces funding to Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and invites everyone to take part in the celebrations

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/20/14 -- Department of Canadian Heritage

The Government of Canada is providing $20,005 in funding to Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) for the 2014 edition of its Aboriginal Day Live & Celebration, which is taking place on June 21 at The Forks in Winnipeg.

The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages made this announcement today. The Government of Canada is providing financial support through the Celebrate Canada program. Celebrate Canada is four days of celebrations that begin with National Aboriginal Day on June 21, continue with Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24 and Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27, and end with Canada Day on July 1.

--  Held at The Forks Historical Site, APTN's Winnipeg Aboriginal Day Live &
    Celebration event features:
    --  a Cultural Village and Celebration Stages showcasing First Nations,
        Inuit, and Metis dancers, singers, artists, storytellers, and
        drummers;
    --  a pow wow and a skateboard competition;
    --  a free evening concert, co-hosted by Michelle Thrush and Derek
        Miller, featuring some of the most celebrated names in Aboriginal
        music and television; and
    --  a fireworks display to end the day's activities.
--  About 35,000 people are expected to participate in the activities at The
    Forks.
