SHANGHAI, CHINA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/20/14 -- Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz has completed a successful agricultural trade mission to China where he led a delegation of more than 70 people including representatives from 30 associations and companies, provincial Ministers of Agriculture from British Columbia and Manitoba and officials from Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Minister Ritz held meetings with key Chinese government officials, reinforcing the importance of stable long-term trade, as well as science and technology partnerships between the two countries. These meetings yielded major market access achievements that will benefit a wide range of Canadian agricultural sectors.
Minister Ritz also engaged in meetings with Chinese industry where he helped advance the interests of Canadian agricultural businesses looking to expand their reach in the emerging Chinese market.
- Once in place, the market access gains for beef, cattle, swine, timothy hay, blueberries and cherries that were secured during this trade mission are estimated by industry to be potentially worth more than $400 million annually.
- In addition, the Minister witnessed the signing of contracts that will result in a further $280 million of Canadian exports into China.
- Since 2006 agriculture and seafood exports to China have increased more than fivefold to total $5.6 billion annually, making China the 2nd most valuable market for Canadian agricultural exports.
"This mission has again reinforced Canada's mutually-beneficial partnership in agricultural trade, science, technology and innovation with China. Working with our industry, the Government of Canada continues to set the stage for our producers, processors and exporters to increase their competitiveness and sales in the ever expanding Chinese market."
- Gerry Ritz, Agriculture Minister
