City of Longmont and Calix Enable Colorado's First Gigabit Community

The Calix E7-20 Selected to Power the Nation's Largest Municipal Fiber Project Since 2007

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- (Marketwired) -- 06/23/14 -- Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced that the City of Longmont, Colorado has selected the Calix E7-20 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP), 836GE Residential Services Gateways (SG), and 700GE family of indoor optical network terminals (ONTs) to enable Colorado's first gigabit community. Longmont Power & Communications (LPC), a municipal electric and broadband utility, will operate the network and offer voice and data at speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) to homes and businesses throughout the community. Using gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology for the fiber network, LPC is already delivering services to a select number of residents and businesses.

Longmont is one of the largest communities in the United States to embark on a municipal fiber deployment. The fiber network is being constructed in six phases; with phase one beginning construction in August of 2014.

"As Colorado's first gigabit city, we are significantly improving the competitiveness of our community and positioning Longmont for future economic growth," said Tom Roiniotis, general manager of Longmont Power & Communications. "With this commitment to our community, it was important for us to seek out best-in-class solutions for our network. LPC has selected access solutions from Calix, routing equipment from Cisco, and transport equipment from Cyan. This network architecture was already put to the test during last year's severe flooding in our area. Our network performed well, keeping the community connected and up to speed with the very latest information when we needed it most."

In September of 2013, Longmont suffered major flooding, crippling the community and its emergency crews, while also limiting transportation to and from Longmont. Throughout the flooding and recovery, the Calix E7-20 and the rest of the combined best-in-breed solution remained solid and unharmed, providing a key lifeline for the entire area.

"The City of Longmont has proven to be a true leader in municipal broadband, setting a powerful example for other cities bringing broadband to their communities and showcasing just what fiber can enable for its citizens and businesses," said John Colvin, Calix senior vice president of North American sales. "Calix has partnered with municipalities, utilities, and traditional communications service providers to deliver gigabit services to more than 30 communities around the world. We are committed to spreading the reach of gigabit networks even further and enabling communities of all sizes to enjoy improved economic development, better education and public services, and an enviable broadband lifestyle."
