ExplorOcean Announces 2014 Summer Camp Programs

A Variety of Unique Camps Merge STEM Education and Fun During Summer Break

NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/23/14 -- ExplorOcean, a premiere nonprofit ocean literacy center in Newport Beach, invites kids to enroll in three summer camps: Underwater Robotics Camp, Makers Camp and Lego Robotics Camp. Each camp occurs over the course of five days beginning July 7 and running throughout August 29, with multiple sessions of each camp. In addition to the weeklong summer camps, ExplorOcean is also introducing 13 hands-on science workshops in the new Innovation Lab. ExplorOcean is dedicated to educating K-12 students about the importance of the ocean and its impact on life, all while imparting invaluable science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts.

"Our camps are a great way to keep kids enthused and busy during the summer break," says ExplorOcean director of education Dr. Wendy Marshall. "ExplorOcean kids learn new concepts that help to expand their minds. Our programs focus on STEM education and teaching kids critical thinking and problem solving skills. When they participate in these new types of learning during the summer, it boosts memory retention, improves the way they learn, and opens up the way they think about the world around them -- ultimately impacting their ability to thrive during the school year ahead."

  • ExplorOcean's Lego Robotics Camp (ages 6 and up) helps campers sharpen math and science skills in the most entertaining way possible -- by building and programming robots! Campers learn to use Lego©NXT software in ocean-based scenarios using robots while skill building with fun team projects and competitions. ExplorOcean is pleased to offer this premier robotics camp in collaboration with Mathobotix. Lego Robotics Camp meets 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with optional day-to-day extended hours available on the website. The cost is $259 for members and $299 for non-members, with a lunch option of $5/day. Registration for the Lego Robotics Camp is available at http://explorocean.org/education/camps/. Sessions run July 7-11, July 21-25, August 11-15, August 18-22, and August 25-29.

  • ExplorOcean's Makers Camp (4th grade & up) enables campers to develop their skills while drawing from an invaluable resource -- their own imagination. Curious kids revel in everything from mini-motors to play dough. They complete guided projects using tools like LittleBits and MaKey MaKey as well as design their own inventions with the help of tinker tools like 3D printers, mini-motors, and laser cutters from the innovation lab. Makers Camp meets 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with optional day-to-day extended hours available on the website. The cost is $199 with an $80 materials fee and a lunch option of $5/day. These camps are limited to 15 participants per session. Registration for the Makers Camp is provided through the City of Newport Beach/Newport Navigator. Maker's Camp sessions are available July 14-18, August 4-8, and August 25-29.

  • ExplorOcean's Underwater Robotics Camp (ages 9 and up) teaches students how to build a submersible remotely operated vehicle (ROV) while simultaneously developing an understanding of the science principles in play. The activities explore and investigating submarine design, waterproofing, buoyancy, motor movement, propulsion, all of which are grounded in STEM principles. The cost is $199 with an $80 materials fee and a lunch option of $5/day. Camp meets 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with optional day-to-day extended hours available on the website. Registration for the Underwater Robotics Camp is available through the City of Newport Beach/Newport Navigator. Sessions are offered July 21-25, August 11-15, and August 18-22.

  • ExplorOcean's Maker Workshops (ages 10 and older) ExplorOcean introduces 13 new hands-on science workshops full of exciting new projects, tools and technology. These workshops will be held in the Innovation Lab where young makers get the time, tools, and space to create. Children can learn to solder, build rockets, make radios, build and program robots, and so much more. Workshops are offered June 23rd-August 30th. Registration is available at http://explorocean.org/events/.
