"The Internet of Things is irrelevant," said Chad Jones (pictured below) during his presentation at the recent @ThingsExpo in New York.
Now that he has your attention, perhaps I should add some context to this quote. Chad, who is VP of IoT Strategy at Boston-based LogMeIn was making the point that the IoT is irrelevant in and of itself: "The IoT is about transforming businesses and lives," he noted. "Just connecting things on the Internet is not enough."
LogMeIn was founded in 2003 with a mission to provide renote access and control, file sharing, systems management, data backup, business collaboration, and on-demand customer support of all the computers and devices found on the Internet and IoT.
Chad also participated in an IoT discussion panel in New York, now available on YouTube.
During his @ThingsExpo presentation, he outlined an IoT use case involving New England BioLabs (NEB), which provides DNA experiment components through on-site freezers. Without the IoT, the firm's customers were impeded by slow, manual ordering processes; a lack of knowledge about supply levels; a massive supply catalog that was difficult to understand; and the need for researchers to store and inventory products themselves.
With a smart, Internet-connected freezer - an IoT solution - NEB's customer problems seemed as if they would go away.
But Wait! There's More!
Not so fast, according to Chad. As stated above, just connecting things on the Internet is not enough.
"Building a holistic solution is complex and time-consuming," he noted, as he outlined the steps involved in doing just that. The on-site smart freezer needs to be provisioned with cloud data storage, web applications, uses CRM from Salesforce, ERP from Epicor, and is tied together with LogMeIn's Xively lifecycle management solution.
"The results have been transfomative," he said. NEB now receives detailed usage profiling that "drives customer intimacy and satisfaction," Chad says. The supply and service chains have been optimized, and there is now incremental up-sell and cross-sell that didn't exist before. In addition "researcher usage analysis now drives the company's future product roadmap," Chad says.
