Physical Therapists to Boost Skill Set, Credentials, With New Oncology Certification Program

CALABASAS, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/25/14 -- With the release of the Comprehensive Management of Edema course, physical therapy continuing education leader EDUCATA and the Oncology Section of the APTA reached a major milestone in a new certification program. The Certificate of Achievement in Oncology Physical Therapy will prepare physical therapists in America and around the world for successful careers in oncology-related rehabilitation.

"Survival rates for cancer patients have steadily increased and it's estimated that nearly 14 million Americans alive today had cancer in their medical history", said Lisa VanHoose, PT, Ph.D. and president of the Oncology Section of the APTA. "Close to two million new cases are expected to be diagnosed in the US this year alone. This represents a huge population whose need for physical therapy during and after treatment has to be addressed."

The Certification of Achievement in Oncology PT course series will thoroughly prepare PTs for a specialization in the field of oncology rehabilitation. The program, which has launched with the edema management certification, will address many of the skills needed for advanced practice. It includes online didactics, case study reviews and hands-on workshops. Online courses are provided through EDUCATA and are taught by top academic specialists like Dr. Marisa Perdomo, PT and faculty at the University of Southern California (USC).

The program consists of the following sections:

  • Foundations of Oncology for Physical Therapists - 2.5-hour online course
  • The new 10.5-hour The Comprehensive Management of Edema course - addressing issues of any edema, within and beyond oncology
  • Physical Agents - an upcoming online course
  • Cancer Rehab Case Studies, due out shortly
  • And week-long, hands-on workshops throughout the USA, starting early in 2015.

It will also offer future course series in Pediatric Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Care, Advanced Edema Management, and HIV Disease Rehabilitation.

"We are proud and excited to offer the online education components of this program," said Marilyn Pink, PT, Ph.D. and EDUCATA CEO. "Physical therapy of patients with cancer, whether during or after treatment, represents a tremendous opportunity to help, providing vital benefits, as shown by evidence. This new program also adds a valuable skill set to any PT's curriculum and prepares them for a rewarding career in this field."

PTs wishing to purchase the Comprehensive Management of Edema course at a special introductory price of 25% off can do so by applying the special code LYMPH614ONC at checkout. This special offer is available until June 30th, 2014.
