Government of Canada Supports Over 3,500 Science and Engineering Researchers, Students in Canada

New grants and scholarships will drive scientific discovery; create jobs and prosperity for Canadians

LONDON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/26/14 -- Scientists, engineers and students at universities across Canada will receive significant support from the Government of Canada for discovery research and training. Before touring a state-of-the-art lab at Western University today, the Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced 3,796 research awards that will further discoveries in a full range of fields in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This significant federal investment will support scientists, engineers, post-doctoral fellows, and students at universities across the country as they drive innovation, and ultimately economic prosperity, across Canada. The awards announced today comprise the 2014 competition results for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's Discovery Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements, Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, Postgraduate Scholarships, and the Postdoctoral Fellowships.

At Western University, $15 million will go to researchers and trainees, including Dr. Ana Luisa Trejos who is receiving $145,000 to develop smart wearable technology devices to help Canadians suffering from chronic pain.

An integral component of the government's efforts to develop, attract and retain the world's most talented researchers at Canadian universities, the NSERC Discovery Grants Program funds discovery research in a multitude of scientific and engineering disciplines. Together, these awards build a broad base of research capacity across the country.

Quick Facts

-- Researchers across Canada will be sharing more than $340 million from
NSERC's flagship Discovery Grants program. These funds - in many cases
lasting for a full five years - provide the means and freedom to pursue
their most promising ideas and breakthrough discoveries. Their findings
in turn will underpin the innovations that help drive Canada's economic
    growth for years to come.

-- The $78 million in scholarship and fellowship awards support Canada's
best graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. The awards provide the
flexibility and independence so these future research leaders can
develop their full potential. As well, researchers with Discovery Grants
use a significant part of their funding to recruit and retain top-notch
graduate students from across the country and internationally.

Quotes

"By supporting over 3,500 researchers and students in Canada our Government is providing the right kind of help to push the frontiers of knowledge in science and engineering and ensure Canada's leadership for years to come. In so doing, we are developing, attracting and retaining the world's most talented researchers who carry out the scientific research that creates jobs and prosperity and improves the quality of life of Canadians."

The Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science and Technology)

"Our support for researchers and students through Discovery Grants and scholarships is laying the foundation for Canada's future prosperity and continued quality of life. The highly competitive funding for discovery research raises the bar for science and engineering excellence in Canada, and unleashes the creative potential of our researchers. Building on this dynamic research environment, NSERC's scholarships and fellowships are attracting and cultivating new talent with the skills necessary for the growth of our knowledge-based economy."

Janet Walden, Chief Operating Officer, NSERC

"NSERC Discovery Grants and Scholarships are fundamentally important for sustaining outstanding research in Canada in areas that are critical for the well-being of all Canadians, for our economic growth and prosperity, and for training our future scientific leaders. More importantly, this support helps us to remain globally competitive and innovative in pushing the frontiers of knowledge that will benefit Canada."

John Capone, Western University Vice-President (Research)

"I am inspired to find a solution for musculoskeletal disorders, and to untether patients from therapy centres. This Discovery Grant allows me to design, develop and evaluate new smart devices that patients will wear to not only measure musculoskeletal performance, but to provide support and implement therapeutic treatments. It's like having a digital physical therapist with you at all times."

Ana Luisa Trejos, Western University professor
