LONDON, ON--(Marketwired - June 27, 2014) -
- The 70-acre site in west London will be sustainably developed into approximately 2,000 living units and 400,000 sq. feet of commercial retail space, which will be designed to generate as much energy as it will use from renewable sources.
- Community advancements include solar rooftops and facades, urban gardens, community-wide electric vehicle charging capabilities, low-impact water management, and will even explore possibility of salt-free streets and sidewalks.
- Market research conducted by S2E with residents of London concluded the strong desire for a sustainable community built with environmentally friendly features including full use of rainwater, parks and trails for mixed use; welcoming green streets; and reasonably priced and cost-effective homes.
Sifton Properties Limited and S2E Technologies Inc. today announced the signing of a partnership agreement that will start the development of the first state-of-the-art SMART Community called "The Village at RiverBend" in London, Ontario.
The Village at RiverBend will be built on an energy-producing "smart grid" designed to enable the buildings themselves to generate and share all the energy that the community will need for everyday life and work activities. Advanced technology will make it possible and affordable for unused energy to be stored for future use. Examples include using electric vehicles to store energy for the community and using excess heat generated in some parts of the community to augment power to greenhouses or community pools.
Sifton Properties Limited is known for its long family history of challenging the status quo. Richard Sifton, President and CEO, strongly believes in the continuous improvements and sustainability that can be created within communities. "The Village at RiverBend will be one of the world's most advanced communities built with new technologies. With the first building constructed next year, this will be a community within which all Canadians will want to live, work and play."
A feasibility study conducted by S2E, as part of the Samsung commitment to the Ontario Government to create sustainable jobs through their Green Energy Investment Agreement, determined which technologies and designs would be needed to economically create the smartest, most-sustainable community in the world. The study included a stakeholder team made up of over 90 professionals from major local organizations including Sifton Properties, London Hydro, the City of London, London Economic Development Corporation, MITACS and 11 universities and colleges. Many of the universities involved belong to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) research network called Smart Net-Zero Energy Buildings Strategic Research Network (SNEBRN).
"Building energy-efficient communities is one of the cleanest and most cost-effective ways to meet the power needs of our homes and businesses, today and into the future," said Milfred Hammerbacher, CEO of S2E Technologies Inc. "The development of SMART, sustainable communities not only creates jobs but also creates endless possibilities for other green design projects and services. Canada could become the world's leading exporter of SMART Community designs and products."

Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn’t actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. In his session at DevOps Summit, Gordon Haff, Senior Cloud Strategy Marketing and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat, will discuss why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices ra...

Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism – which is precisely one of the features of Docker. Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead of bein...

DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, it is now feasible to create a rich desktop and tuned mobile experience with a single codebase, without compromising performance or usability.

Application metrics, logs, and business KPIs are a goldmine. It’s easy to get started with the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana) – you can see lots of people coming up with impressive dashboards, in less than a day, with no previous experience. Going from proof-of-concept to production tends to be a bit more difficult, unfortunately, and it tends to gobble up our attention, time, and money.
