Phoenix Police Department Shares Crime Data With the Public

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO--(Marketwired - July 09, 2014) - The Phoenix Police Department is making crime data available to the community through a free, online crime map. The department partnered with BAIR Analytics and is now live online. The interactive software, RAIDS Online, provides the public access to information about crime in the Phoenix area. Through the service, users can search for crime in a certain area and see geographic locations where it occurred, all within a specified time range.

The software also allows for citizens and law enforcement to work together to combat crime, as users can submit anonymous tips through the website to assist police. Emailed crime alerts are also available to users, who can customize the alerts by crime type, time range and location.

"Making this data available to the public shows that Phoenix Police Department is dedicated to its community policing efforts," said Sean Bair, President of BAIR Analytics. "This partnership benefits the residents of Phoenix, who can continue to stay safe through the committed work of Phoenix PD."

The partnership signifies the department's efforts in providing an easy, free service to Phoenix residents, so they can better inform themselves about criminal activity happening around them. The data is updated regularly by Phoenix PD, who is hoping to include updated crime data every 2 weeks.

The data used to populate the map is cleaned to only include certain bits of information, including location, crime type, date and time. This is done to ensure the victim's privacy is protected.

Embedded analytic layers also add an enhanced degree of analysis. Easy to use geographic density maps show "hot spots" in areas where crime has occurred more often, providing a visual representation of high-crime areas.

Phoenix PD spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump praised the partnership for promoting shared responsibility in policing, emphasizing that now the public can become more involved in preventative policing efforts.

"RAIDS puts the information at the fingertips of the public, which we haven't been able to do before," Crump said.
