CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 07/10/14 -- The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®) has launched the "Professional Boundaries in Nursing" video, which can be viewed at www.ncsbn.org/2930.htm, to explain the continuum of professional behavior and the consequences of boundary crossings, boundary violations and professional sexual misconduct.
Year after year, nursing consistently tops national polls of the most widely respected and trusted professions. The results of these polls reflect the special relationship and bond between nurses and those under their care. Patients can expect a nurse to act in their best interests and to respect their dignity. This means that a nurse abstains from attaining personal gain at the patient's expense and refrains from inappropriate involvement in the patient's personal relationships. In order to maintain that trust and practice in a manner consistent with professional standards, nurses should be knowledgeable regarding professional boundaries and work to establish and maintain those boundaries.
In addition to this new video, NCSBN provides a variety of resources that can educate nurses about professional boundaries. A companion piece to the video is the updated "Professional Boundaries in Nursing" CE course. This course reinforces the nurse's responsibility for establishing and maintaining professional boundaries in the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship and the consequences of boundary crossings, boundary violations and professional sexual misconduct. The cost is $30 for a three-week subscription; 3.0 contact hours are approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing and are awarded upon successful completion of the course. Register for the course at www.learningext.com.
Additionally, a brochure "A Nurse's Guide to Professional Boundaries" can be ordered free of charge by completing the online order form at www.ncsbn.org/2551.htm.
Founded March 15, 1978, as an independent not-for-profit organization, NCSBN was created to lessen the burdens of state governments and bring together boards of nursing (BONs) to act and counsel together on matters of common interest. NCSBN's membership is comprised of the BONs in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories -- American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. There are also 16 associate members that are either nursing regulatory bodies or empowered regulatory authorities from other countries or territories.
NCSBN Member Boards protect the public by ensuring that safe and competent nursing care is provided by licensed nurses. These BONs regulate more than 3 million licensed nurses, the second largest group of licensed professionals in the U.S.
Mission: NCSBN provides education, service and research through collaborative leadership to promote evidence-based regulatory excellence for patient safety and public protection.
The statements and opinions expressed are those of NCSBN and not the individual member state or territorial boards of nursing.
