D2L Partners With IBM to Evolve Its Analytics Portfolio

IBM's Cognos business intelligence provides powerful capabilities to integrate and analyze vast amounts of learner data

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE -- (Marketwired) -- 07/14/14 -- D2L-the EdTech company that created Brightspace, the world's first truly integrated learning platform (ILP)-today announces that it has partnered with IBM to embed its Cognos business intelligence engine into D2L Insights(TM) to provide an enterprise-class business intelligence tool for the education industry. The partnership enables D2L to offer the type of breadth that only IBM can deliver to empower education customers with the best enterprise analytics-reporting engine available today.

"Effective use of data is vital for success in today's business world and in education, leveraging analytics is increasingly critical, promising to transform teaching and learning," said John Baker, President and CEO, D2L. "With IBM's Cognos business intelligence engine, Brightspace by D2L can empower organizations' decision-makers by combining academic classroom data, such as grades and attendance, together with their enterprise data, such as financial aid and registrar data."

The integration with the Cognos business intelligence engine enhances D2L Insights by expanding the field of view for learning data to levels beyond an individual organization. Educational institutions will now be able to integrate their data sources to display a single view of education data.

"At a time when expectations for data in education are increasing, institutions must strengthen their analytics capabilities as a means to help make sense of the data deluge they are faced with," said Michael D. King, Vice President, Global Education Industry at IBM. "The expanded relationship between D2L and IBM is an example of the collaboration that is needed to create exceptional student experiences and outstanding outcomes in education, for students and institutions alike."

From business intelligence to financial performance and strategy management, Cognos software is at the core of helping institutions become top performing and analytics-driven. D2L's partnership with IBM presents opportunities for education clients of each company to take advantage of an enterprise-class solution set that can extract new insights from the explosion of available data and ultimately help improve student performance.

The true value of the Internet of Things (IoT) lies not just in the data, but through the services that protect the data, perform the analysis and present findings in a usable way. With many IoT elements rooted in traditional IT components, Big Data and IoT isn’t just a play for enterprise. In fact, the IoT presents SMBs with the prospect of launching entirely new activities and exploring innovative areas. Wearable devices have come of age. The primary applications of wearables so far have been "the Quantified Self" or the tracking of one's fitness and health status. We propose the evolution of wearables into social and emotional communication devices. Our BE(tm) sensor uses light to visualize the skin conductance response. Our sensors are very inexpensive and can be massively distributed to audiences or groups of any size, in order to gauge reactions to performances, video, or any kind of present...

DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, it is now feasible to create a rich desktop and tuned mobile experience with a single codebase, without compromising performance or usability.
