Glassdoor Launches Free Job Explorer(SM) to Help Americans Easily Map Job Opportunities Near and Far

New Interactive Tool Helps Job Seekers Quickly Pinpoint Available In-Demand Jobs as an Individual or as a Couple, and Identify Alternate Career Paths

SAUSALITO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/22/14 -- Despite improvements in unemployment rates, one in three (33 percent) of the 9.5 million unemployed Americans are classified as long-term unemployed (jobless for 27 weeks or more), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yet, the same agency reports 4.6 million job openings in the U.S. as of May 2014, but where exactly are these jobs? This is a problem many job seekers face when trying to find work for which they are qualified -- until now.

Glassdoor, the leading jobs and career community, today revealed Job Explorer, a free visualization search tool that makes it easier for Americans to pinpoint the best job opportunities by city, county and state, and uncover other possible career paths.

Job Explorer offers a new way to search for jobs, using an interactive U.S. map, so job seekers can see the greatest job opportunities where they live, or where they might be willing to commute or move. Regions with the highest job opportunities are determined by density of relevant job listings, population and the unemployment rate in each area. The color-coded map makes it easy to distinguish the locations with the greatest opportunities -- the darker the highlighted region on the map, the greater the opportunity to find work.

For dual-income households, Job Explorer can perform two job searches at the same time, identifying regions throughout the U.S. offering the best combined opportunities for the couple. For example, if one job seeker is a nurse and their partner is a teacher, the Job Explorer map highlights where in the country these jobs are more widely available for both.

In addition, Glassdoor goes one step further and provides job seekers customized suggestions on alternate jobs and career possibilities, based on analysis of millions of resumes in Glassdoor's growing database that looks at the career progression of those with similar qualifications and work history. Within this, job seekers will also see the percentage of how many people have gone on to work each alternate job, along with the national average base salary for each. For example, if someone searches for a warehouse worker job, the progression tool suggests other jobs like security officer in which 10 percent of warehouse workers transition to a security officer role and earn an average annual base salary of $28,290.

"We believe Glassdoor will help Americans get back to work by offering successful career models, and better tools and insights into where the best opportunities lie," said Robert Hohman, Glassdoor CEO and co-founder. "We are focused on closing the gap between those looking for jobs and those with jobs to offer, which can ultimately boost our nation's economy."

The Glassdoor Job Explorer is the direct result of a challenge presented to the company's data science and engineering teams acknowledging the ongoing struggles job seekers were having discovering relevant jobs. During a hackathon, the Glassdoor team architected the prototype and then incorporated feedback from job seekers and partners. This included sharing the early beta in a private brainstorming event at the White House last month. Based on the early efforts, earlier this month, Vice President Joe Biden touted Glassdoor as "an entrepreneurial company that has expanded on the traditional model of job posting websites."

Glassdoor's mission is to help people everywhere find jobs and companies they love. With more than 23 million members in 190 countries, Glassdoor is one of the largest jobs communities and recruiting platforms globally with a proprietary and growing database of jobs, employee-generated reviews and ratings, and companies.
