SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Aug. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Stearns Square Summer Concert series continued on July 24 with a performance by Connecticut-based rock band Diamondback. The event was part of the City of Springfield's summer-long concert series that runs through the end of August.
The Stearns Square Summer Concert series takes place on Thursday nights in downtown Springfield's historic Stearns Square. The square serves as the hub of the city's entertainment district and vibrant Club Quarter.
The square is centrally located between Worthington Street and Bridge Street.
The long-running series began as CityBlock in the summer of 2000 when the city closed off part of Main Street in downtown Springfield and made an outdoor, festival-type setting for live concerts.
The following year, the series moved to Stearns Square in an effort to highlight the Club Quarter's eclectic mix of restaurants, nightclubs, office space, and market-rate housing.
This season, the concert series will bring in regional and national acts like The Smithereens, John Eddie, and Roomful of Blues.
Diamondback came to regional prominence in the early 1990s, earning praise for their self-titled recording and touring relentlessly around New England. The group became a fixture at Bike Week in Laconia, NH and opened for bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and Marshall Tucker.
The concerts are free and open to the public and the music begins at 8 p.m.
The Stearns Square Summer Concert Series is produced by the Springfield Business Improvement District. For more information in the concerts and events going on in downtown Springfield, visit www.springfielddowntown.com.
