In an Age of Decline for Billboard Advertising, Truck Wraps May be the Answer

Everyday, people commute to and from work, passing signs for almost every business in the local area.  Frankly, signage is your first impression on a new customer, so it's efficient to make it count.  In recent years though, things have gotten somewhat out of hand.  The United States has almost one million billboards across the country, approximately half of which have been put up within the past 20 years alone.  

With billboards garnering such a negative perception for being "ugly" or "overbearing", the tides of what is considered "effective advertising" seem to be shifting.  Federally, "The Highway Beautification Act" dictates the frequency of billboards across the nation, but each state has the power to act within the guidelines and create tighter regulation of their own.  

States such as Florida and Michigan have seen contention from residents due to the issue of land displacement, the cutting down of trees to install billboards.  Michigan also recently passed legislation on digital billboards, citing they are distracting and forced upon drivers.  From a consumer standpoint, they are a nuisance, and from a cost standpoint, they are impractical.  Some digital signage could cost roughly $300,000, a number far too great for any medium sized business, or even some larger firms.

So what is the ideal approach today?  Subtlety.  Advertising that is aesthetically pleasing and doesn't feel forced. Truck wraps advertising is a great way to accomplish this.  Companies like Hale & Hearty use very large, high definition imagery of one of their soups with a tagline regarding how it's made from scratch.  Nowhere on this does it say to "come in" or "try our food" - it simply elicits a natural response, hunger - which drives you to try their product.
