World's Leading International Scientific Coffee Meeting Will Be Held in Colombia in September

Nearly 400 Scientists and Specialists Will Participate in the 25th International Conference on Coffee Science - ASIC

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/12/14 -- Under the motto "Leveraging knowledge for coffee sustainability," the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) and the Association Scientifique Internationale pour le Café (ASIC) will organize the 25th International Conference on Coffee Science - ASIC 2014. The conference, which is considered the world's most important scientific coffee meeting, will be held in Armenia, Colombia between September 8 and 13.

The event takes place every two years and brings together the coffee industry and leading academics and international specialists from all over the world working in various fields of coffee science and technology. By encouraging dialogue between these actors, the conference allows them to share and compare their research, contributing to innovation and sustainability of the coffee industry.

Nearly 400 scientists and specialists from all continents will attend 84 oral presentations that will divulge research developed in 34 countries. This will offer attendees a rich and varied program. The event will address matters including the physiological effects in humans and chemistry of coffee, plant genomics and the use of innovative tools for plant breeding and adaptation to climate change, coffee quality, pests and diseases, and coffee sustainability.

With 17 presentations and 44 posters, the scientific research developed in Colombia will play a major role in the international meeting. Colombia and the FNC's Coffee Research Center (Cenicafé) are considered leaders in scientific research, technological development and knowledge concerning coffee. Scientists from the FNC and Cenicafé will share with their counterparts the developments that have earned Colombia a leading position in various fields including technology transfer and programs that benefit coffee growers.

Some of the issues that Colombian scientists will address include the following: the effects of caffeine in vasodilation, the improvement of blood plasma's antioxidant capacity by coffee consumption, chemicals tied to coffee quality, coffee rust resistant varieties, regionalization, early warnings associated with diseases, natural pest control, carbon footprint measurement and management in the coffee chain, measurement of the impact of sustainability programs, and the development of post harvesting environmentally friendly technologies such as Ecomill®.

Besides congregating scientists and specialists, the International Conference on Coffee Science encourages the involvement of key actors of the coffee industry who are interested in innovation, science and technology.

Because of the event's influence, government authorities and leading companies in innovation and sustainability have begun to support proposals that promote the competitive, equitable and sustainable development of agricultural processes.

The presence of such actors, from both consuming and producing countries, is a propitious scenario to establish or strengthen relations between coffee researchers, buyers and producers.
