HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/21/14 -- Public Safety Canada
The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today announced a total of $4.7 million in federal funding for two crime prevention projects in Halifax and North Preston.
Alternative Pathways, delivered by Halifax's Bryony House, will offer life skills to girls in Halifax who exhibit social and behavioural challenges to help them make better choices, control impulsive and aggressive behaviours, and avoid becoming involved with the criminal justice system. This project will receive $3.4 million in federal funding. Alternative Pathways will use the Stop Now and Plan Program (SNAP) model. SNAP is an evidence-based, award-winning crime prevention model program developed in Canada by the Child Development Institute (CDI).
The second project announced today, Souls Strong will receive $1.3 million to help the Halifax Regional Municipality reduce violence in male youth aged 15-20 who are already involved with, or at high risk of involvement with criminal activity in North Preston. By combining a family and community focus, which is in keeping with African Nova Scotian traditions, Souls Strong will facilitate a more effective, whole-systems approach to crime prevention. More importantly, this combined approach will be tailored to meet the specific needs and cultural context of this particular African Canadian community. Souls Strong will target risks in all life domains (individual, peer group, school, family, and community), while working toward increasing protective factors that help youth and families cope and withstand the pressures associated with criminal-related activity.
-- From April 2012 to March 2013, the Government funded 105 active, multi- year community-based crime prevention projects through the National Crime Prevention Centre, in which more than 16,000 at-risk youth participated. -- Since the creation of the Youth Gang Prevention Fund in 2007, $27.9 million in funding has been approved for a total of 19 projects in cities across Canada. The Government has provided ongoing funding to support the Youth Gang Prevention Fund. This fund invests in communities where youth gangs are an existing or emerging threat, and supports initiatives that clearly target youth in gangs or at greatest risk of joining gangs. -- The Crime Prevention Action Fund assists communities and organizations to develop and implement crime prevention initiatives that utilize model and promising programs to address known risks and protective factors associated with offending behaviour.
"Our Government is keeping our streets and communities safe and supporting families. Our plan includes tackling crime, strengthening victims' rights, and ensuring an effective justice system. Projects like Souls Strong and Alternative Pathways keep our streets and communities safe while providing children and youth with the tools to help them make smart choices."
- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
"Bryony House is thrilled to be a part of the important work with female youth and families through the Alternative Pathways project. Our goal to create awareness and end violence in our community makes it a great fit."
- Laurie Ehler, Executive Director, Bryony House
"The support of Public Safety Canada has made it possible for Halifax to establish an innovative, community-led project aimed at crime prevention. Souls Strong works collaboratively with families and neighbours to help young men at risk build capacity - and, by doing so, build a brighter future for themselves and their community."
- Mike Savage, Mayor,Halifax Regional Municipality

How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends: Exposing the device to a management framework Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic Exposing that business layer and data to end users. This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happe...
