WSI: General Summer Pattern of Warm/Dry Northeast, and Cool/Wet Southwest to Persist Into Autumn

Early Signals for Winter Still Mixed, but Colder Risks More Likely Late in Season

ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwired - August 25, 2014) - WSI (Weather Services International) expects widespread above-normal temperatures across Scandinavia, eastern and central mainland Europe and the UK for the September-November period, with below-normal temperatures confined to parts of Iberia, France, and Italy.

According to WSI Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford: "The remains of Hurricane Bertha have helped to trigger a pattern change towards much cooler temperatures across western Europe so far in August. We currently expect this pattern to linger into at least early September, so we have expanded the area of forecasted below-normal temperatures to encompass all of southern Europe. As autumn progresses, however, we expect the areal coverage of below-normal temperatures to decrease again, with widespread above-normal temperatures becoming common again, especially across northern and eastern sections. The winter signals are somewhat mixed, with a few indicators suggesting a cold winter is coming, while others, including the more skillful climate models suggesting another mild winter. Most of the early indications do suggest that the cold weather that does occur will be more likely later in the winter, however."

In September, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region* -- Warmer than normal
UK* -- Warmer than normal, except Ireland
Northern Mainland* -- Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland* -- Cooler than normal

In October, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region -- Warmer than normal
UK -- Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland -- Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland -- Warmer than normal, except Iberia

In November, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region -- Warmer than normal
UK -- Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland -- Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland -- Cooler than normal
