EXPERT ALERTS:

E-Cigarette Regulation Necessary to Protect Consumers
Maher Karam-Hage, M.D.
Addiction Specialist
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
"There's no question that regulation of e-cigarettes would help protect consumers. In light of the current evidence and reports from the AHA, CDC and WHO showing that e-cigarette products have varying nicotine levels and contain traces of known carcinogens, it's imperative to know what's really in them to ensure consumer safety. Regulation would help standardize the industry and provide much needed quality control oversight."
Karam-Hage, M.D., associate professor of behavioral science and addiction specialist at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is available to discuss the known and unknown health effects of e-cigarettes and the potential implications of the AHA, CDC, and WHO recommendations on clinical practice. A clinical psychiatrist, his research at MD Anderson examines psychopharmacology and addictive disorders, specifically in regard to nicotine, tobacco and alcohol dependence.

More Research and Regulation Needed for E-Cigarettes
Alexander Prokhorov, M.D., Ph.D.
Youth Smoking Cessation Expert
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
"While the reports and recommendations published by the AHA, CDC and WHO steps in the right direction, more research and regulation is needed for e-cigarettes and other emerging tobacco products, especially with regard to young people. E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive, and can be a gateway for users to switch to other nicotine products. Kids are lured into believing that e-cigarettes are safer when disguised by creative packaging and popular flavorings, but the reality is that they haven't been tested. What looks cool and attractive can be an illusion, especially to children and teens who are easily impressed. We must be proactive in educating our communities, schools and government about dangers associated with these products."
Prokhorov, M.D., Ph.D., behavioral scientist and youth smoking cessation expert at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is available to discuss the known and unknown health effects of e-cigarettes and the potential implications of the AHA, CDC, and WHO recommendations on clinical practice. His work focuses on creating and testing innovative tobacco prevention and cessation programs for high-risk teens and young adults. He is the director of MD Anderson's Tobacco Outreach Education Program, and recently led the development of the Tobacco-Free Teens app and spearheaded MD Anderson's ASPIRE (A Smoking Prevention Interactive Experience) program – both are new approaches to keeping young people free from the grips of nicotine addiction.

Helping Brain Injury Victims After Auto Accidents
David Christensen
Attorney & Counselor
Christensen Law
A concussion or a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause permanent brain damage, so it should be taken seriously, according to a recent study by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). The negative effects on the lives of traumatic brain injury victims can increase the longer it is untreated, so an auto accident victim should see a doctor as soon as possible. Says Christensen: "Victims of severe TBI are going through a life-changing event. They need to safeguard their future."
Christensen is passionate about helping brain injury victims. He is considered an authority in the field of representing traumatic brain injury victims. He is fluent in the language of neuroimaging, micro-damage and neuropsychology. He was one of the earliest trial attorneys to aggressively advocate for TBI victims when he tried his first TBI case over 22 years ago.

Benefits of Nutritional Supplements
Michael A. Smith, M.D.

Dr. Smith can address virtually all health and wellness issues, as well as those involving scientific literature. He is author of The Supplement Pyramid - How to Build Your Own Nutritional Regimen Dr. Smith is host of Healthy Talk on RadioMD.com

Low Rate of Breastfeeding Among Asian Mothers
David Chiang, M.D.
Attending Physician, Obstetrics & Gynecology
New York Hospital Queens
"The reasons for the low rate of breastfeeding among Asian mothers vary. The availability of formula, the lack of places for breastfeeding at work, cultural traditions and ignorance about its benefits are some of the explanations. Additionally, some women have problems breastfeeding -- but lactation consultants can help mothers overcome with this difficulty."
Dr. Chiang is available to discuss breastfeeding in general; the findings in CDC's Breastfeeding Report Card 2014; New York State Department of Health statistics about breastfeeding rates in Queens; common reasons mothers don't initiate breastfeeding or continue with it for at least 12 months, as the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends; best strategies for new moms to initiate breastfeeding;, The New York Hospital Queens Breastfeeding Initiative.
