Record Number of Scout Popcorn Varieties for Sale this Year

Annual Scout Popcorn fundraiser creates opportunities for education and adventure

OTTAWA, Oct. 21, 2014 /CNW/ - Start holiday shopping in October without even leaving home with Scouts Canada's delicious Scout Popcorn. Throughout the month of October, tens of thousands of Scouts from across the country will be selling Scout Popcorn door-to-door in their communities. There are more varieties of gourmet popcorn and pretzels available than ever before with Chocolatey Carmel Crunch and White Cheddar Cheese Corn added this year to the current lineup of 15 varieties, making it a great gift for teachers, friends and family. Plus, it is delivered to your door in December, just in time for the holidays.

This national fundraising campaign for Scouts Canada allows Scouting youth to develop valuable life skills, raises funds to support their local groups and opens doors to life-changing experiences.

"Year after year, Canadians are generous with their support of Scout Popcorn, not only because they love the flavours and variety of products, but because they recognize the invaluable role the fundraiser plays for youth," said Andrew Price, Executive Commissioner and CEO of Scouts Canada. "Scout Popcorn continues to enable Scouts Canada to make Scouting affordable for families while providing children and youth with valuable opportunities for education, adventure and personal development."

Scouts who raise $2,500 or more will become eligible for a scholarship fund. These Scouts will see six per cent of their total sales this year, and each year going forward, invested in an account for their post-secondary education expenses. Since it began in 1995, 913 Scouts have been enrolled in the scholarship program. To date, $74,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to 86 youth.

Scouting groups can allocate the money to everything from craft supplies to camping gear to wilderness adventures. The funds raised by the Scout Popcorn program are also used to pay for equipment, activities and trips such as the upcoming Pacific Jamboree in B.C. and International Jamboree in Japan in 2015, providing Scouts with new friends, fun activities and unforgettable experiences.

Scouts Canada proudly supports the Canadian Armed Forces by allowing Canadians to choose to purchase Scout Popcorn for our men and women in uniform. In 2013, Canadians purchased over $134,000 worth of Scout Popcorn for Canadian Forces bases across Canada.
