Cloud for Financial Services By @BlueBox | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Financial Services are Perfect for Blue Box PCaaS

Cloud is Perfect for Financial Services; Financial Services are Perfect for Blue Box PCaaS

By Bob DeSantis

Financial services organizations were among the earliest enterprise adopters of cloud computing. The ability to leverage massive compute, storage and networking resources via RESTful APIs and automated tools like Chef and Puppet made it possible for their high-horsepower IT users to develop a whole new array of applications. Companies like Wells Fargo, Fidelity and BBVA are visible, vocal and engaged supporters of the OpenStack community, running production clouds for applications ranging from dev/test and backup/DR to customer-facing applications that give them a competitive edge by rolling out new and improved software products faster than their peers.

And it's not just banks. Companies in the extended financial services market are embracing cloud for its agility, speed and ability to innovate new applications fast.

Why not public cloud for financial services?

Consistently, customers and prospects tell us that security and performance are the top reasons they are looking at private cloud over public cloud. This common thread is all the more true in financial services, as financial firms are continually challenged to earn and retain the trust of their consumers in their ability to protect their data.

As this vertical segment continues its leadership in cloud adoption, we at Blue Box believe we have the perfect match for the unique requirements of financial services firms. Capabilities like hardened media security protocols. The ability to achieve compliance with multiple standards such as PCI. The performance and security that you can only get from single tenancy. The added benefits of a physical perimeter around the deployment.

Let's look at each of these.

Compliance

Now, let's talk auditing. We fully support our customers in their ability to become PCI or FINRA compliant, and we'll look at integration points, shared responsibility and use compensating controls for their auditors if need be. Blue Box can also help with SOC 1 Type II compliance.

Media Security

Part of achieving and maintaining compliance is data protection. Blue Box Cloud offers Certified Chain of Custody for Media Destruction. Each of our data centers is equipped with an industrial degausser; a multi-pass binary scrubbing system; and an industrial, 20-ton hydraulic hard drive folding machine that physically destroys media after degaussing. Each of these steps is part of the destruction chain of custody that's part of every managed private cloud we spin up for our financial services customers.

Performance and Control, Tailored for Financial Services

Blue Box Cloud is a 100% dedicated single-tenant architecture. Financial services customers are not sharing resources with other Blue Box customers. No noisy neighbors, no oversubscription or "VM hoarding," no virtual separation issues. Your storage, firewalls, and compute resources are yours. You can fully manage them for optimal performance of your applications.

And here's a benefit to Blue Box Cloud that's not common among managed private cloud offerings: multi-geography control. Blue Box offers the ability to replicate workloads and backup across four data centers in the United States and the European Union, with more on the way.

See It, Try It, Trust It

Blue Box gives financial services customers the freedom to equip their racks with the elements they need, like physical firewall, compute-intensive or network-intensive configurations. We can even arrange for tours of the data center to inspect the cage where their racks are hosted. Ask Amazon to do that.

And, of course, Blue Box Cloud customers can "see it and test it" before they deploy on Blue Box Cloud. We can offer this because each deployment of Blue Box Cloud is architecturally consistent with all our deployments. That consistency is part of what makes Blue Box Cloud a highly reliable option for financial services customers, complete with 24/7 support and customer service.

While a hybrid cloud can ease that transition, designing and deploy that hybrid cloud still offers challenges for organizations concerned about lack of available cloud skillsets within their organization. Managed service providers offer a unique opportunity to fill those gaps and get organizations of all sizes on a hybrid cloud that meets their comfort level, while delivering enhanced benefits for cost, efficiency, agility, mobility, and elasticity.
DevOps has long focused on reinventing the SDLC (e.g. with CI/CD, ARA, pipeline automation etc.), while reinvention of IT Ops has lagged. However, new approaches like Site Reliability Engineering, Observability, Containerization, Operations Analytics, and ML/AI are driving a resurgence of IT Ops. In this session our expert panel will focus on how these new ideas are [putting the Ops back in DevOps orbringing modern IT Ops to DevOps].
