Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Verizon Communications Integrates Codenomicon's DEFENSICS Robustness Testing Platform Into Its Chest of Armor
Best-of-Breed Testing Tools Set New Standard in Helping Product Vendors Identify Security Vulnerabilities in Earliest Stages of

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/06/07 -- RSA® Conference 2007, Booth # 242 -- Codenomicon Ltd., a leading provider of state-of-the-art software testing tools, has announced that Verizon Communications, a leader in delivering broadband and other wireline and wireless communication innovations to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers, will use its DEFENSICS® platform as its best-of-breed robustness testing solution.

"We are committed to Codenomicon's testing technology," said Robert M. Ormsby, director, Network Management Laboratory at Verizon Communications. "We found that this vulnerability defense platform was the only methodology available on the market today that would allow us to validate our SIP compliance and functionality in order to meet our security goals."

In the most security-conscious industries, vendors must adopt a well-planned and clearly articulated approach to enhancing product security to ensure that security vulnerabilities and critical flaws are identified in the earliest stages of the development process. Security incidents, service interruptions and failures caused by these quality-related problems lead to higher development costs, product recalls, costly software upgrades, damage to corporate brands, customer retention issues, and increased legal exposure.

"As a company with a unique role in national homeland defense efforts, how Verizon approaches security threats, analysis and testing is extremely important," said James Flowers, principal member of the technical staff at Verizon Communications. "For this and other organic reasons, Verizon puts a real premium on the security of its data networks and the testing process, so in our lab DEFENSICS has been compared to that of an entire code analysis team. The significant difference being that this test platform allows us to comprehensively test mission-critical elements in weeks rather than years. With this kind of innovation Codenomicon is far ahead of the curve and we're fortunate enough to have this very powerful tool in our armory."

The Codenomicon DEFENSICS vulnerability defense platform provides proactive, pre-deployment security and robustness solutions for IP-based and wireless systems to allow them to defend against the increasingly sophisticated attacks levied against the corporate infrastructure. The technology architecture has been developed over 10 years and has proven to be the most effective and efficient methodology for finding vulnerabilities. The DEFENSICS platform creates systematic and repeatable tests and can easily integrate into the developer's existing testing environment.

"While security is a top priority, Verizon is very quality-oriented and Codenomicon is an integral part of our quality process. DEFENSICS has allowed us to look at buffer overflow problems and validate some of our SIP compliance," said Ormsby. "We've spoken to some the vendors that are supplying us with products and we have convinced them that using the DEFENSICS platforms would be advantageous for them to incorporate as part of their own product testing."

The vulnerability defense platform provides the most effective black-box solution to allow developers, service providers and enterprises to defend their software, devices and data from security exposures and system failure. The software-only solution, which tests the security and robustness of IP-based and wireless systems, gives test teams broader code and RFC coverage, helping find more vulnerabilities and critical flaws than other negative, fuzzing-based solutions.

"Today, the impact of a security breach is rising exponentially -- and the post-breach, 'closing the barn door after the horse has escaped' approach to security is no longer viable or even conscionable for companies intent on protecting its customers responsibly," said Isaac Sundarajan, chief executive officer at Codenomicon. "The DEFENSICS platform gives engineers an opportunity to proactively safeguard customers by identifying and eradicating potentially hazardous vulnerabilities prior to product release."

Codenomicon was recently ranked as the sixth-fastest growing company on Deloitte's Rising Stars list of high-tech companies in Finland. The list is a part of the Fast 500 EMEA program, which recognizes 500 technology companies that have achieved the fastest rates of annual revenue growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Codenomicon test tools automate the process of testing information systems and software components for their tolerance against unexpected inputs such as network-based attacks.

Codenomicon test tools are used to improve the quality of software and to support customer-driven product evaluation, certification and acceptance testing of communication software. Codenomicon solutions include tools for testing the security and robustness of core Internet software, VoIP, 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi, email and digital media.
