We've looked at slow PostgreSQL queries causing problems and have not been able to find an issue. We've also tested for the case where the PostgreSQL server is down and have not been able to create an issue. We therefor...
FREMONT, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/01/07 -- Slashdot.org (part of the OSTG, Inc.,
technology network, a wholly owned subsidiary of VA Software Corporation)
(NASDAQ: LNUX), the top-ranked technology and cultural news site*, today
announced the release of the Slashdot Firehose interface, a new content
aggregation and management system that enables potential Slashdot content
to be drawn from user submissions, bookmarks, journal entries, and RSS
feeds in addition to the existing Slashdot editorial process.
The Firehose interface expands content aggregation to include expanded data
collection, increased user participation, and a versatile user interface
that provides rich streams of news and information to Slashdot users.
Firehose enables users to submit content in a few different formats. Users
can submit news anonymously via "Slashdot This." While logged in as a
user, viewers can bookmark sites, post comments, and create user journals
for Slashdot consideration. Content generated by users, or from popular
systems like Slashdot, Reddit, Del.icio.us, Digg, and Google, can
automatically feed content into the "Firehose" for users to read, discuss,
and rate. Slashdot editors will review feedback to select the best stories
for posting to the Slashdot front page. The new criteria for selection are
based on a combination of a popularity system and Slashdot editorial
guidelines.
"Firehose is a completely unique approach that melds user generated
content, RSS feeds and the current Slashdot submission process to provide
an innovative, constant, steady flow of news and information to Slashdot
users," explained Slashdot Executive Editor Jeff "Hemos" Bates. "It
represents a next generation approach to content aggregation that allows
for increased user participation and feedback."
A wide range of "views" of Slashdot ranging from a general search to a
highly targeted, front-page search are now available with Firehose. These
different "views" of Slashdot are based on several possible criteria
created by users to filter news based on time, submission type, topical
section, and popularity. These user preferences can then be used to create
"views" that may be subscribed to via RSS or browsed via the user page
allowing for grass roots community leaders and specific subsets of Slashdot
stories to emerge.
In addition to better communication between editors and readers this system
will also allow all content submitted to Slashdot to host a discussion so
that readers will be able to discuss all material submitted to the site
rather than just what the editorial staff selects. The combination of
community driven content and a consistent editorial process promises to
deliver varying levels of content for all users depending on individual
user preferences.
