Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

agami Systems Announces Next Generation Network Attached Storage Solution
agami Systems to Introduce Unified NAS/IP SAN Storage with Unparalleled Performance Levels; Provides 3-5X More Throughput on a S

By: PR Newswire
Mar. 12, 2007 02:00 PM

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- agami Systems, an industry leader in delivering enterprise NAS systems with live file system replication, breakthrough operational performance and TCO, today announced the next generation agami Information Server. The latest agami Information Server (AIS) will include support for iSCSI to enable the consolidation of different forms of business data on a single storage platform with industry-leading performance levels that offer 3-5X more throughput than competing IP SAN systems, advanced enterprise storage management capabilities and advanced data protection offerings for iSCSI applications.

By enabling customers to manage and consolidate file and block-level data on one high-performance platform, agami is set to take advantage of the growing momentum around iSCSI. A recently released research report from ESG Research, iSCSI Enters the Mainstream, found that iSCSI adoption is in the early mainstream, that early adopters are extremely satisfied with their iSCSI SANs, that lower costs and ease of management are driving iSCSI adoption and that the number of planned adopters is increasing at a rapid rate.

Additionally, by taking advantage of the fact iSCSI is implemented in agami Systems' NAS framework, the AIS delivers all the benefits of iSCSI without the SAN complexity and a higher degree of virtualization to simplify storage management. The new hybrid solution leverages agami's file system strengths to enable snapshots, replication & high-availability of block-level data.

"The combination of iSCSI and NAS is smart and valuable," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "Sharing the same network infrastructure for both block and file data enables end users to leverage their IT investment, simplify their environments, reduce capital and operational costs. According to our research, end users with NAS want to use it for file sharing and iSCSI for database and email applications. agami provides a high performance, easy-to-use, scalable storage solution that enables customers to consolidate storage and provide centralized data protection."

"With these latest advancements we're raising the bar for what next generation storage solutions should look like. We're adding more functionality while keeping our price point and overall TCO extremely low, performance levels high and meeting customers' expectations around the need for more energy- and space-efficient hardware," said Paul Speciale, vice president of product management at agami Systems. "With our new unified NAS/IP SAN solution we're able to support both file-based and native block- based applications to consistently high performance standards," continued Speciale.

With the introduction of this next generation NAS appliance, agami Systems is unveiling a number of important benefits and innovations:

o Storage consolidation: agami offers iSCSI benefits including ease of use, low cost and unlimited distance constraints, without Fibre Channel SAN complexity and the ability to concurrently serve file and block-based data. agami's support for the iSCSI protocol is implemented in its NAS framework, enabling both block and file I/O through the same easy-to-use management interface.

o High-performance: A unified NAS/SAN that doesn't compromise on performance and offers 3-5X faster throughput of block-level data on a single appliance, helping lower customers' TCO by requiring fewer servers.

o Improved flexibility and ease of management: As opposed to other vendors that support fewer targets or volumes, the AIS offers industry-leading virtualization features that can support up to 256 iSCSI targets and 1024 volumes, thereby improving the flexibility to configure for multiple applications, enhance security, and improve data management.

o Advanced data protection: As the first NAS vendor to offer built-in live file system replication, agami Systems is leveraging the agamiFS to enable iSCSI snapshots, replication & high-availability for block-level data, with the same proven capabilities used for NAS file systems.

Pricing and Availability

agami Systems' unified NAS/IP SAN solution will be generally available by the end of March 2007. Support for iSCSI is included as part of the standard pricing and configuration for both the AIS 3000 and AIS 6000 series. Pricing ranges from $24,995 - $99,995.
