We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
MILPITAS, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/13/07 -- Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader
in storage solutions, today launched the most comprehensive family of Unified Serial(TM) RAID
controllers for the PCI Express (PCIe) interface. The new family consists
of five different products and includes 4- and 8-port low-profile models,
as well as the industry's only 12- and 16-port designs. Ideal for
bandwidth-intensive applications including media servers, email databases,
and application servers, these Adaptec Unified Serial RAID controllers
deliver enhanced I/O performance, expanded scalability and high throughput.
"Fujitsu and Adaptec were early to develop serial interface products for
widespread enterprise adoption," said Joel Hagberg, vice president,
marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America,
Inc. "We enjoy a close relationship with Adaptec and the combination of
Fujitsu serial hard drives with Adaptec Unified Serial controllers provides
our customers and partners with compatible, tested solutions that will
enhance performance and scale to manage enterprise data intensive
applications."
The new family of Adaptec Unified Serial controllers enable enterprises to
significantly boost the performance, scalability and reliability of their
SATA disk drive-based solutions, coupled with the ability to also connect
to high-performance SAS drives or both types of drives in the same system.
In addition, by leveraging the industry's most comprehensive compatibility
test lab, Adaptec has ensured that its Unified Serial controllers are
compatible and fully supported by over 270 third-party systems and devices.
"Our goal is to continue to provide the most reliable, scalable, and
cost-effective SAS/SATA storage enclosures to our customers," said Gene
Lee, vice president of AIC, whose enclosure products went through extensive
compatibility testing with the new Adaptec PCIe RAID controllers. "With
Adaptec's latest RAID technology and its trusted reliability, AIC/Xtore is
proud to team with Adaptec to offer users compatible storage components
with leading performance and capacity support."
About the New Adaptec Unified Serial RAID Controllers
Adaptec's new family of Unified Serial RAID controllers are available with
4 to 16 3Gb/s ports and offer connectivity to both SATA and SAS disk
drives. Designed specifically for entry to mid-range servers and
workstations, the family consists of five (5) new solutions: The Adaptec
RAID 3405 with 4 internal ports, the Adaptec RAID 3805 with 8 internal
ports, the Adaptec RAID 31205 with 12 internal ports, the Adaptec RAID
31605 with 16 internal ports, and the Adaptec RAID 3085 with 8 external
ports and the industry's first dual path failover functionality for
external data path redundancy.
All of these new controllers come standard with Adaptec's legendary RAID
data protection including the protection against the failure of two disk
drives (RAID 6) and high-performance RAID 5 with hot space (RAID 5EE). The
Adaptec Advanced Data Protection Suite also includes RAID 1E and Copyback
Hot Spare for improved management and the ability to automatically reset a
hot spare configuration. Customers can also choose to purchase the optional
Snapshot Backup feature that creates a point-in-time copy of an array for
improved data backup, management and disaster recovery.
In addition to a wide range of customer benefits, Adaptec's suite of
Unified Serial RAID controllers for PCIe also enables system builders to
sell a wide range of solutions with a variety of price points using a
single storage architecture.
Features and Benefits
-- Unified Serial Architecture enables the use of both SATA and SAS hard
disk drives for optimal flexibility, capacity and performance options;
-- Supports PCIe host interface with up to 256MB ECC-protected data cache
-- Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) delivers the industry's most advanced feature
set. In addition to standard RAID levels (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10,
and RAID 50), the Adaptec Advanced Data Protection Suite delivers improved
hot spare performance (RAID 5EE) and a patented RAID 6/60 technology
allowing for up to two simultaneous drive failures.
-- Supports array sizes up to 512TB -- allowing full usage of new, higher
capacity SATA drives
-- Utilizes the Adaptec Storage Manager, a next-generation storage
management software that runs on all Adaptec controllers for optimizing
RAID data volumes, disk utilization, provisioning, diagnostics and storage
expansion.
"The enterprise storage market is evolving significantly as high-capacity,
high-reliability SATA drives become an increasingly substantial part of
today's corporate storage strategy. Western Digital is addressing this
fast-growing market segment with a family of enterprise-class SATA drives,
ready for SAS-system integration," said Darrin Bulik, senior manager of
enterprise marketing at Western Digital whose drives also went through
compatibility testing with the new Adaptec PCIe RAID controllers.
"Adaptec is enabling this market with a broad family of controllers that
provide customers the flexibility to scale with SATA and/or SAS drives in
the same system. The two companies worked together in testing WD drives
for compatibility with the new Adaptec PCIe RAID controllers to ensure a
technologically seamless experience for customers."
"We continue to make it easier for our resellers and system builders to do
business with Adaptec. They can standardize on one vendor who has the
broadest product line of low- and high-port Unified Serial RAID controllers
for PCI, PCI-X and now, new low-profile models for PCIe," said Suresh
Panikar, director of marketing for the Data Protection Solutions Group at
Adaptec. "With Adaptec's trusted reliability and extensive compatibility
and interoperability testing, customers are assured that our solutions will
work in the most demanding application environments. While we've priced
these solutions extremely competitively and in line with current SATA-based
controllers, our customers get the added benefit of support for both SATA
and SAS drives with any of these new Adaptec offerings."
