LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/13/07 -- The Nevada Economic Development Advisory
Board (NEDAB) announced that R. Keith Schwer, Ph.D., Director of UNLV's
Center for Business and Economic Research, has agreed to lead the NEDAB's
research and development efforts. An important component of Dr. Schwer's
research for NEDAB will involve gathering securities statistics for the
state of Nevada, information that will help NEDAB reach its goal of
diversified economic growth through capital markets participation.
"Our goal is to capture performance metrics on an ongoing basis so that we
can track the effectiveness of Nevada's capital market awareness campaigns
and how this correlates with company growth and overall economic growth for
Nevada," said NEDAB spokesperson Robert Uithoven.
Examples of some of the issues Dr. Schwer plans to research and track
include:
-- Monies raised in Nevada through registered securities
-- Series 63 securities agents and broker-dealer registrations
-- Participation of Nevada-based corporations in national listing
services and exchanges
-- Financial performance of Nevada-based public companies
"Dr. Schwer's extensive background in economic research and his expertise
regarding our state's economy makes him an ideal match for spearheading
this effort," said Uithoven. "We're encouraged by his support and we look
forward to working with him towards a stronger, more diverse economy for
Nevada."
Dr. Schwer is Director of The Center for Business and Economic Research and
is a member of the UNLV Economics Department faculty. Specializing in
economic impact analysis, econometric modeling, feasibility analysis, and
survey research, Dr. Schwer is recognized as an authority on the business
and economic environment of Las Vegas, the State of Nevada, and the region.
He manages the annual Las Vegas Perspective survey, serves on numerous
state and local advisory boards, and acts as a resource person for
television, radio, and print media.
Dr. Schwer has more than 25 years of experience in business and economics
research in major university programs in Maryland, Nevada, Oklahoma,
Tennessee, Vermont, and Wyoming. He authors many reports and conducts both
basic and applied research. His academic research has appeared in numerous
publications including the Annals of Regional Science, Journal of Applied
Economics, Journal of Applied Business Research, Environment and Behavior
and International Regional Science Review.
He is a member of the American Economic Association, the Western Economics
Association, the Western Regional Science Association, and the Southern
Nevada Area Population Projections and Estimation Committee. He received
his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Maryland, and has two decades
of teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
"Nevada has a long tradition of focusing on economic development," said
Schwer. "I see this as the next step in the evolution of the state's
economy. We live in a world economy, and we now need to compete in
international markets, so we have to be smarter about it. What NEDAB is
doing is a positive effort to grow an entrepreneurial state, to present to
the world the additional benefits of being a Nevada corporation and to
raise awareness of Nevada's capital markets potential. I look forward to
supporting those efforts."
About Nevada Economic Development Advisory Board (NEDAB)
NEDAB is a council of prominent businesspeople and legislators who share a
vision of diversified economic growth through participation in capital
markets and are working with other businesses and the government to make
that vision a reality. NEDAB believes that Nevada has the potential to
become the premier destination in the U.S. for companies looking to enter
the capital markets; that Nevada corporations across a variety of
industries can benefit from participating in the capital markets as a way
to build long-term shareholder value, provide access to capital, increase
visibility and improve business practices to meet the standards of being a
public company; and that an increased number of Nevada corporations
successfully entering and sustaining participation in the capital markets
will create diversified economic growth, increase the number of companies
that physically relocate to Nevada, create new jobs and increase revenue
for the state.
Activities of NEDAB include:
-- Outreach to other economic development groups, legislators,
regulators, business owners, and business and industry leaders.
-- Educational Programs for companies seeking to learn about capital
markets and the advantages of domiciling in Nevada as a private or public
