Wind River to Support Linux

Wind River to Support Linux

RTOS leader Wind River Systems said Thursday it would add Linux support to its tools although the open source operating system competes with its proprietary VxWorks operating system not to mention the fact that back in 2001 Wind River picked up BSDi, the 10-year-old attempt to commercialize Berkeley Unix. As a first step, Wind River said its visionProbe II tool would support developers building Linux-based embedded devices. It's an emulation tool for bringing up boards, flash programming and production testing and is supposed to be available immediately for Linux running on IBM's PowerPC 405 processors. Initial host operating system support will be for Windows. Wind River plans to support additional IBM and Motorola PowerPC devices by the end of this quarter. It is also planning to support various MIPS processors. Wind River attributed the move to extend tools support to Linux to customer requests and market needs. "Linux is now very popular in embedded, but it is quite immature and challenging in the area of tools - particularly for customers bringing up and debugging on custom hardware," said Wind River's senior VP of products Dave Fraser.

Glenn Flinchbaugh, Director of Wind River's Linux Program, will be speaking at the Southern California Linux Expo this February 12th and 13th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Glenn will describe how the Linux COTS strategy enables telecom equipment providers to drastically reduce the months of engineering time typically spent on platform development and maintenance. He will detail the Linux-based COTS advantages that the end-user telecom firms realize, including greater openness and flexibility in the development tools; the greater range of architectures supported; and the appeal of open-source software availability.
