Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Bluesocket Chooses Attune Systems for File Virtualization
Maestro File Manager(TM) Appliance Saves Many Days per Month in File Management

By: Virtualization News
Apr. 4, 2007 07:00 PM

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Attune Systems, Inc., a provider of enterprise-class file virtualization solutions, today announced that Bluesocket, the leader in open wireless security and management solutions, has selected the Maestro File Manager(TM) to optimize file management, provide non-disruptive data migration, and deliver detailed monitoring and reporting of its file storage environment.

Bluesocket started by using Attune's integrated Maestro Symphony Service(TM) reporting tool, which provided in-depth insights into the current state of IT operations-including server-by-server performance metrics, as well as data usage and file storage statistics. The results showed that on-going memory usage on many of Bluesocket's servers had spiked well past 80%. "I definitely liked the detail of the report. With memory utilization, some of that tells me I need to upgrade some of these servers," said Charles Madden, IT manager at Bluesocket.

The report also showed exactly how much storage space was being utilized on each server, a factor that helped Madden formulate a better plan for managing the files and ultimately migrating to newer servers. He noticed that more than 95% of the files spread across the network had not been modified in more than 12 months. "If you'd asked me before the report, I would have figured that about 40% hadn't been accessed in that time," Madden acknowledged.

Madden also likes the prospect of using Maestro's global namespace and non-disruptive migration functionality to transparently perform data migrations and server upgrades in real-time, during the day. The Maestro creates a universal file share that users can access without being aware of the underlying physical location of their data while their access to the file remains unchanged. "For time savings, this alone saves me a couple of days per month, if not more," he said.

A great advantage of the Maestro appliance is the fact that it's built on a Microsoft Windows platform with native support for features like Common Internet File System (CIFS), Microsoft Cluster Server, and Active Directory. "Maestro is Windows-based. A lot of people I know are more comfortable with Windows. It's something I've worked with for more than twenty years. In the end, I just wanted something pretty simple," he added. Madden knows Maestro is going to help him optimize file management without the need to involve users. "In Active Directory, I can just switch users' login scripts one-time to remap to a different namespace. They won't even have to know if I move their file from Tier 1 to Tier 2."

The next stage of implementation includes repurposing legacy Dell servers as current Tier 2 servers. Incorporating this type of tiered storage approach allows him to develop and apply a simple, yet powerful, Attune Maestro migration policy that will automatically move user files not accessed after 60 days to Madden's designated Tier 2 Dell servers.
