Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Fujitsu and Industry Leaders Collaborate to Deliver High Performance Computing Solutions
Best Practice Installation Guide Provides Granular Details for Unassisted Clustering Implementations

By: PR Newswire
May. 17, 2007 12:00 PM

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world's leading suppliers of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and Ethernet switches, today announced the availability of the Best Practice paper for High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions. With the needs of HPC and advanced data centers converging, Fujitsu has bridged wire-speed 10-Gigabit performance with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Compute Cluster Server (CCS) 2003, to enable HPC supercomputing power for a maximum of 254 nodes.

The combined efforts from Fujitsu, Myricom(R), and Microsoft to deliver a world class High Performance Computing (HPC) solution, including Fujitsu servers and 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches; Myricom cards and drivers; Microsoft Windows Server(R) 2003 x 64, Active Directory(R), and Compute Cluster Solution (CCS), provide a complete cluster for deploying applications, and accelerating processing capabilities. The Best Practice paper is intended to provide the fundamentals of configuring Fujitsu 10 GbE switches, as well as installing software for setting up a complete cluster. Tested in the Microsoft computing labs, this best practice installation approach will further service the industry, educate IT professionals on proper deployment and implementation guidelines, and facilitate the installers' success.

"The installation of clustering technology can be misleading at times, with many people simply purchasing a rack of servers with the idea of easily turning them into a functional HPC solution," said Vic Herring, senior director, New Products Group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "Piecing the clusters together from stand-alone operating systems and network components requires a higher-level of knowledge and expertise that is often called on by a professional installer. Fujitsu's best practice paper affords companies the ability to design and implement an HPC clustering technology by providing additional details for unassisted installations."

With Fujitsu's ultra-low latency switching, IT professionals are able to build powerful and efficient systems with a compact form factor, and a flexible network interface that has set new performance standards for the industry at highly competitive price points.
