We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobilygen Inc., a leading provider of low-power H.264 codec ICs, announced today that Elgato Systems, a developer of award-winning products that enable customers to watch, record, edit and share video and TV within the digital home, is using the MG1264 Codec chip for their latest product, the Turbo.264. The Turbo.264 assists various Mac systems to encode movies for use with the iPod(R), Apple TV(R), the upcoming iPhone(R), as well as Sony's PSP and other video playing devices.
Mobilygen's MG1264 Codec chip is designed into the Turbo.264 and enables the device, a Mac-compatible USB stick, to encode any movie into H.264 video format for iPods, iPhones, or AppleTV. The Turbo.264 stick speeds encoding up to five times faster than software encoding, while also freeing up the CPU to allow consumers to work on their Mac without interruption. The stick can be used with any application that uses Quicktime to export to H.264 format including, iMovie HD or Elgato EyeTV. Elgato's Turbo.264 was announced last week for $99.95.
"The Mobilygen MG1264 gives our customers the highest-quality video without extra strain on their Mac," says Markus Fest, CEO, Elgato. "Now, while consumers are using their Mac for other work, a two hour MPEG-2 movie can be converted into high-quality H.264 video in approximately 20 minutes."
"Consumers want quick and easy access to video content for their iPods, Mac systems and soon their iPhones," says Chris Day, senior vice president, sales and marketing at Mobilygen. "The MG1264 provides superior hardware- based H.264 encoding that efficiently speeds up the video encoding process and delivers 800 x 600 high-quality video."
Mobilygen's MG1264 Codec is based on the patented EVE (Enabling Video Everywhere) architecture, which offers outstanding video quality while minimizing power consumption. The MG1264 is capable of encoding and decoding full resolution H.264 video simultaneously with 2-channel AAC audio while requiring only 185mW of total chip power.
