Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

MGE Office Protection Systems' Pulsar MX UPS System Chosen as Consulting-Specifying Engineer's 'A Perfect 10' Product of the Year Finalist
Innovative Scalable Solution Takes Top Rank in Publication Competition

By: Marketwire .
Jul. 11, 2007 12:00 PM

COSTA MESA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 07/11/07 -- MGE Office Protection Systems, (www.mgeops.com), a world leader in providing end-to-end power protection systems for today's power hungry computing, IT and industrial applications, has just been awarded Finalist in Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE) magazine's annual "A Perfect 10" award. Judged by an expert panel of CSE consulting engineers, the Pulsar MX UPS system was selected due to its ability to provide matchless scalability from 5 kVA to 20 kVA, utilizing a modular chassis to accommodate growing data networks. Designed to protect 20 to 110 blade servers, the system's unique topology is comprised of online double-conversion technology that assures the highest level of power protection. The Pulsar MX UPS System will be presented in CSE's annual "Specifiers Guide" and online (http://www.csemag.com) as readers vote throughout July to determine the winner of the coveted 2007's "A Perfect 10" most valuable product.

About the Pulsar MX UPS System

As small and mid-sized companies grow, so do power requirements to protect additional servers, blades and telecommunication systems. To meet this need, MGE Office Protection Systems has designed the Pulsar MX 5000 RT power and battery modules and Pulsar MX Frame, a fully scalable solution designed to deliver business continuity 7X24. Utilizing a redundant architecture, the unique system can scale power and runtime as demand increases or when higher levels of availability are required -- all in a compact and affordable package.

When the Pulsar MX on-line double-conversion power modules are connected in parallel within the Pulsar MX Frame, the power can be readily scaled from 5 kVA to 10, 15 (with redundancy) or 20 kVA power levels -- without disrupting connected equipment -- all within the Pulsar MX's compact 16U (28 inch) frame. With up to 18 kW, this scalable solution provides the highest power density in the industry and is a perfect match for a rack fully populated with blade servers. For the first time, the same power and battery sub-modules can be used for both the standalone UPS and the modular chassis, which significantly reduces the entry cost to scalability. Through this innovative approach, users can decide to acquire a cost-competitive Pulsar MX 5000 RT, and then migrate to a fully scalable, redundant solution using the Pulsar MX Frame while still using the original power and battery sub-modules of the original 5 kVA standalone UPS.

Using only 3U (5.25 inches) for the combination of power and battery sub-modules, the 5 kVA compact 3U rackmount/tower units feature hot-swappable battery and power sub-modules, auto battery-test, switched outlets, multilingual LCD display and intuitive power management software which is compatible with all of the popular operating systems -- including Microsoft's Vista. To prolong battery life, the Pulsar MX features a wide input voltage and frequency range to avoid using the batteries unnecessarily. For extended backup time, redundant external battery modules can quickly be added. If a battery extension should fail, the system will not be affected due to the system's built-in redundancy. For high-density rack environments, the 15 and 20 kVA models can be used as stand alone or integrated into a standard 19" rack.

Pulsar MX Frame boasts two communication slots for versatile, redundant network integration. MGE Office Protection Systems' extensive power management offering is a perfect match for the Pulsar MX Frame, providing coverage for most environments found in high-density computing like Linux or VMware as well as the ability to dynamically manage redundancy at the protected server level.
