We’re in the Midst of a Pivotal Year for DevOps

Pivotal Year for DevOps

Better Software Magazine is an excellent resource for any IT professional involved in development, testing, project management, QA and more. The magazine is a TechWell publication and covers topics such as Agile methodologies, DevOps mobile and cloud. I was recently invited to write The Last Word column in the Spring 2017 Edition.

In this recent column titled, “2017 is a Pivotal Year for DevOps,” I write about the importance of software development and DevOps for today’s digital economy and point out that better customer experiences are driven by better software.

To quote from the article, “the quality and functionality of a company’s software affects everything from competitive differentiation to customer support and, ultimately, employee satisfaction… read the article, download the pdf

I also discuss reasons why DevOps is becoming more important to the enterprise. One of those big reasons is because it works to bring development closer to the heart of the business. That happens best when DevOps tools offer operational data and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to help businesses make better decisions and respond to the market faster.

In the article I point out some trends that are developing now. Here are a few excerpts:

  1. The Left Shift

Automated testing and continuous delivery, “created a leftward shift in the pipeline, resulting in smaller-scale tests that are completed earlier and faster. Quality continues to be a focus, and micro-services are helping accelerate that drive by enabling the deployment of higher-quality code at a smaller risk to the business…read more.” Feedback is being pushed further back in the software development lifecycle, which helps to reduce risks at the end.

  1. Focus on Analytics

“Focusing on analytics provides a more holistic and comprehensive approach to DevOps. Over the next year, we will see more connected tools and processes, as well as KPI data that can enable new levels of decision making by leveraging operational data to provide intelligent correlation and traceability…read more.” Organizations will then be able to uncover the causes behind a rise in service tickets for example, with more precision than before, and fix errors much faster.

  1. Continuous Monitoring and Feedback

“While DevOps tools are meeting the needs of organizations involved with the software development lifecycle, many organizations have evolved. They now need to understand their DevOps value stream across the software development and delivery lifecycle—from planning to operations…read more.” By evaluating value streams, organizations can improve processes and remove bottlenecks with clear visibility of the entire DevOps toolchain.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to accelerate business and build customer satisfaction for your end-users through the promise of DevOps. Whether you are just getting started on the journey, or have taken many steps to transform culture within your organization, understanding what’s coming next in this significant software development trend is important.
