Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Jets.com Goes Green
Private Jet Charter Leader and Carbonfund.org Partner Enabling Travelers to Fly Carbon Neutral on Private Jets

By: PR Newswire
Sep. 4, 2007 11:00 AM

QUINCY, Mass., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Setting the standard for the private jet industry, Jets.com (http://www.jets.com/), the award winning jet charter company, and Carbonfund.org, the leading carbon solutions organization in North America, have partnered to create Jets.com's Carbon Neutral Flights Program, providing a way for Jets.com clients to offset the carbon footprint they create when using a private jet.

If one is taking a jet - private or otherwise - CO2 emissions resulting from use of jet fuel are contributing to the global warming problem. When clients are chartering a jet with Jets.com, they will have a voluntary way of canceling out the greenhouses gases they release into the atmosphere during their trip.

To counteract the CO2 released into the air from their private jet flight, Jets.com customers can choose to add a small charge to their travel cost. These charges will then be contributed to Carbonfund.org for reforestation programs across America.

"Providing private jet clients with the ability to fly carbon neutral is yet another win against global warming," said Eric Carlson, Executive Director of Carbonfund.org. "Offsetting flights with trees helps restore ecosystems, habitats and greens communities, as well as create jobs. We applaud Jets.com's charter industry leadership in taking a stand against global warming."

How It Works

Using World Resources Institute data, Carbonfund.org has worked with Jets.com to determine the carbon dioxide emission (CO2e) rates for each type of jet on the Jets.com network. Jets.com has set up an online system that calculates the carbon offset cost using the specific jet's CO2e rate, the $5.50 unit cost for each CO2 metric ton and the estimated flight time of a given trip.

The CO2e offset cost is then presented to the Jets.com client when they sign the flight contract. The customer can volunteer to participate in the Carbon Neutral Flights program by checking off a box stating, "Yes, I would like my flight to be Carbon Neutral". The offset contribution, which will then be included in the cost of the trip, is 100% tax deductible. It is made in the client's name by Jets.com to Carbonfund.org. Jets.com will also forward supporting tax record documents to the customer.

"We are committed to providing a real and immediate solution to an issue of concern, not only to Jets.com and its clients, but also to private air travelers all over the world," said Nate McKelvey, CEO of Jets.com. Working with Carbonfund.org, we are now able to provide our clients with the means to lessen the ecological impact of their travel. Flying carbon neutral enables our clients to make positive environmental choices and counteract the addition of more greenhouse gases into our atmosphere."

Providing extreme customer service, market-driven pricing, and a policy of transparency in regard to safety, pilot competency, and operator records, Jets.com's unique online system enables customers to select a different, specific jet each time they fly. It also allows them to get detailed safety reports on their pilots and plane, review customer surveys on trip experience with jets and crews, learn about cabin set-up and amenities via an online 360- degree photo tour of each jet, and obtain market-driven pricing for their trips through Jets.com's online auction for air operators.
