Arabia Saudita otorgó 664 patentes en 2017, el doble que todos los países árabes combinados

Arabia Saudita se ha ubicado en el puesto 23 entre 92 países en cuanto a patentes otorgadas por la Oficina de Patentes y Marcas Registradas de los EE. UU. (United States Patent and Trademark Office, USPTO) en 2017. La gran mayoría de estos inventos patentados son científicos.

De acuerdo con StatNano, que publica al inicio de cada año un informe sobre el estado de la nanociencia, la tecnología y la innovación del año anterior, Arabia Saudita recibió 664 patentes el año anterior, en comparación con las 517 patentes de 2016 y 409 patentes de 2015. Además, este número duplica al de todos los países árabes en su conjunto durante el mismo periodo.

Este año, la King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) se ubicó en séptimo lugar entre las 10 principales universidades del mundo en cuanto al número de patentes otorgadas. “La universidad logró 183 patentes en 2017 y superó a la Johns Hopkins University, a Harvard College y al California Institute of Technology”, comentó el Dr. Khaled bin Saleh Al Sultan, presidente de la universidad con sede en Dhahran.

“La universidad ha recibido más de 800 patentes hasta el momento, y este número es un 60 % mayor que el número total de patentes registradas por todas las universidades de los países árabes, que se fijan en unas 300”, agregó.

Junto a la universidad, Saudi Aramco, que recibió 233 patentes nuevas en 2017, es responsable por más de dos tercios del número total de patentes del año pasado. En 2016, Aramco recibió 175 patentes nuevas y solicitó otras 285.

Las últimas novedades acerca de patentes llegan en un momento en que Arabia Saudita ha centrado su atención en la transformación digital y en la mejora de oportunidades en campos diversos, que van desde la tecnología y el turismo hasta las artes y el emprendimiento.

Arabia Saudita también ha reclamado, por vez primera, un lugar entre los “Diez países principales en patentes de nanotecnología en 2017”, según un informe de StatNano del mes pasado. El informe dice que “la razón es el crecimiento de un 128 % en el número de solicitudes de patentes de nanotecnología publicadas en este país en 2017.

El número de solicitudes de patentes de nanotecnología publicadas en la USPTO en 2017 muestra un crecimiento del 3,2 %, en comparación con el 2016”.

El aumento significativo en el número de patentes es un indicador del ambicioso plan “Vision 2030” de Arabia Saudita, que ya ha empezado a rendir frutos.
