Nominations Now Open for the Prestigious 2019 Marconi Prize

The Marconi Society, dedicated to furthering scientific achievements in communications and the Internet, is now accepting nominations for the prestigious Marconi Prize.

The $100,000 Marconi Prize, considered the pinnacle honor in the field of communication and information science, is awarded annually to a living scientist or scientists who have made a significant contribution to those fields. The award was established in 1974 by Gioia Marconi Braga to honor her father, Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of radio.

Marconi Fellows include an elite cohort of individuals whose work continues to set the stage for modern telecommunications and the Internet, from Internet pioneers Robert Kahn, Paul Baran, Vint Cerf and Leonard Kleinrock to leading fiber optics inventors Sir Charles Kao and Sir David Payne; from World Wide Web creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee to cyber-security innovators Whitfield Diffie, Martin E. Hellman and Ron Rivest. Wireless luminaries Irwin Jacobs, Henry Samueli and Marty Cooper have been honored and the 2018 Marconi Prize was awarded to Tom Leighton, CEO of Akamai and creator of the content delivery network industry.

Nominations for the 2019 Marconi Prize must be submitted by July 31, 2018. For more information about the Marconi Prize and the nomination form, go to http://marconisociety.org/fellows/marconi-prize-nomination-form/.

The Marconi Society is also accepting nominations for the 2018 Paul Baran Young Scholars. This award celebrates a diverse group of visionary young people whose work already is having a significant impact on our connected world. These innovators work in areas including software engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, information theory, network engineering and quantum communications. In honor of Guglielmo Marconi, who was just 27 when he invented radio, nominees for the Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar Award must be born in 1990 or later. Nominations are due June 30, 2018.

The 2019 Marconi Fellow will be honored at the annual Marconi Society Symposium in October, 2019. The 2018 Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar awards will be presented on October 2, 2018 in Bologna, Italy.
