Plone and Drupal: Different Approaches, Different Results
paul.nowak wrote: Matt, thanks for the comments. I made an error on the version of Plone. It's 2.5 Plone running on Zope 2.9x. In regards to the additional products, we have a skin installed and we have a product that we had custom developed for us that connects to a PostgreSQL database. We've looked at slow PostgreSQL queries causing problems and have not been able to find an issue. We've also tested for the case where the PostgreSQL server is down and have not been able to create an issue. We therefor...

Xythos Opens JSR-170 Level 2 Beta Program
Helps Support Content Migration and Consolidation

By: PR Newswire
Sep. 10, 2007 05:09 PM

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Xythos Software, a leading developer of basic document management software, today announced its support for JSR-170 level 2 in its WebFile Server platform. The Java Specification Request (JSR)-170 standard defines a uniform application programming interface (API) for access to content repositories intended to simplify how content is accessed and managed.

Xythos' introduction of level 2 support for JSR-170 opens the doors for developers seeking alternatives to creating their own content management systems. Organizations intent on consolidating content repositories will also find JSR-170 compliant systems simpler to migrate content into. According to the Apache Foundation, which helps maintain the reference implementation specification, "Level 2 of JSR-170 specifies all the writing capabilities needed to bi-directionally interact with a content repository in a fine and coarse grained fashion."

Programmers can avoid wasting time developing custom API's (application programming interfaces) and data conversions and instead focus on application level development knowing that applications designed to work with standard will be portable across JSR-170 compliant systems. Xythos also supports advanced JSR-170 options including versioning, query, locking and transactions not required in level 2.

Developers of the popular online collaboration and learning environment, Sakai are busy using Xythos to create a single java content repository (JCR) for all content created and stored on campuses. "We are actively working on a Xythos/Sakai JSR-170 integration which several institutions have already inquired about," said Ian Boston, a lead architect for Sakai and the CTO at CARET for the University of Cambridge. "The JSR-170 standard finally offers us an excellent opportunity to provide effective and close integration between enterprise wide Xythos installations and institutional Sakai deployments and we are collaborating with several R1universities pursuing this content management strategy," he added.

Whitman College is a Xythos customer and Sakai partner already considering how the technologies can be used together to improve content sharing and security. "It makes sense to develop common content repositories for campus applications," said Mike Osterman, Middleware Analyst at Whitman. "Whitman gains flexibility by adopting a modular approach and can reduce redundant document storage for users as well as easily adapt and change applications as needs arise," he added.

"Academic institutions create and share a wealth of content so it's reasonable to expect them to take the lead in leveraging new technologies like JSR-170," said Ed Miller CEO of Xythos. "We're also seeing considerable interest in the Xythos' JSR-170 implementation from commercial software developers, such as SAS Institute," he added. Organizations which would like to learn more about Xythos' support for JSR-170 or enroll in the beta program should visit http://www.xythos.com/home/xythos/solutions/integrations_jsr170.html
