Known as a phenomenal competitor throughout her career with her aggressive riding style, Tara started in BMX before switching over to downhill biking. She went on to take the top spot at the 2006 US National Downhill Championships, is a two-time National Four-cross champion, and has won gold, silver and bronze medals at the X Games.

Having hit her stride in downhill biking, Tara returned to BMX competition and set her sights on qualifying for the US Team for BMX's debut at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. While competing in early September at the Jeep King of the Mountain finals in Beaver Creek, Tara suffered a tragic crash in which she fractured her vertebrae and damaged her spinal cord, resulting in a below the waist paralysis.

True to form, Tara is taking a positive approach to her situation. Already an inspiration to female athletes through her many accomplishments, Tara has now become an inspiration to all as she begins the rehabilitation process to reach her biggest goal yet: to once again walk and ride a bike.
