Ten Questions Every Business Should Ask When Considering Virtualization
Considering Virtualization for Your Business?

By: Virtualization News
Feb. 6, 2008 03:45 PM

Research and Markets has announced the addition of Is Virtualization Right For You? The Top Ten Questions You Should Ask - An Advisory Note to their offering.

Virtualization is a rapidly growing, but sometimes over-hyped, technology. EMA research shows that over 95% of enterprises plan to deploy virtualization in some form, with deployment growing at least 25% per year. But it may not be right for every enterprise.

So is virtualization right for you?

Focusing on server, operating system, application, and desktop virtualization, this Advisory Note outlines the top ten questions that every enterprise should ask in order to determine if virtualization is right for them. It also provides specific, actionable recommendations to help enterprises answer these questions, to be better prepared for virtualization, and to make their impending virtualization projects more successful. Any enterprise that is considering a new deployment, expanding a smaller initial deployment, or that just wants to know more about preparing for virtualization, should read this Advisory Note.

EMA defines virtualization as “a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end-users interact with those resources.” So is virtualization right for you? Without any further qualification, the simple answer is absolutely, unequivocally, undeniably, 100% yes. But it is not that simple.

The simple truth is that every modern computer, from laptops to mainframes, already uses virtualization—in the file system, for memory management, and more. Most enterprises also use virtual storage of one form or another. And Web applications like Salesforce.com are arguably a form of software virtualization. Strictly speaking, virtualization is right for everyone.

This advisory note, however, will focus on server, operating system, application, and desktop virtualization—the biggest trends in the current virtualization mania. It will outline the top ten indicators that enterprises can use to determine if virtualization is right for them, and recommend how enterprises can be better prepared to answer these questions as they look towards virtualization.
