Must-See Satellite Technology Unveiled at SATELLITE 2008

Dozens of satellite-enabled communications products launched at SATELLITE 2008, Feb. 25-28 at the Walter E. Washington Conventio

ROCKVILLE, Md., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Dozens of cutting-edge, new products will be introduced to the satellite communications marketplace during SATELLITE 2008, Feb. 25-28, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington D.C. The SATELLITE 2008 show floor showcases more than 54,000 square feet of new products and services from more than 270 leading solutions providers, including SES New Skies, Hughes, Eutelsat, General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies and TANDBERG Television, Part of the Ericsson Group.

Visitors to the exhibit hall will be able to get up-close and hands-on with hundreds of new products, and innovative technology solutions including these:

- Crawford Satellite Services (Booth #718) launched an MPEG-4 HD (high definition) platform on SES AMERICOM's satellite AMC-18 for domestic distribution into cable and DBS (digital broadcast system) providers. This platform, using the latest technology, offers bandwidth efficient distribution and transport for programmers, including cable television network Tennis Channel. - Foxcom's (Booth #468) entirely new suite of products: the SatLight/Platinum. Based on breakthrough RF to fiber technology, the suite is designed to meet today's increasing demands for higher performance and more RF control and monitoring. The Platinum family includes products for L-band, IF, 10MHz, 5MHz, and a host of accessories. - Wegener Corporation's (Booth #115) new Unity 552 Enterprise Media Receiver. The Unity 552 has bandwidth-efficient MPEG-4/h.264 video coding for both standard definition and high definition video, digital and analog outputs, as well as advanced DVB-S2 demodulation. Network operators can achieve 40-70% greater signal compression using MPEG-4/h.264 video compression and DVB-S2 modulation compared with the current standard MPEG-2 video compression and DVB-S satellite modulation. - iDirect Technology's (Booth # 535) Series 12000 universal 4-slot hub. The new hub supports multiple inbound and outbound networks on up to four satellites with a fifth slot that can be used for configuration or redundancy. The universal 4-slot hub is highly flexible, supporting the entire array of network topologies including star, mesh, SCPC (Single Channel Per Carrier) with outbounds up to 18 Mbps (Time-Division Multiplexing) and up to 140 Mbps (DVB-S2/ACM) per line card. - SwiftBroadband by Vizada (Booth #101) is Inmarsat's first fully IP- based, high-speed data service offering broadband in-flight connectivity including both cockpit communications and cabin applications. SwiftBroadband by Vizada enables a diverse range of applications from safety communications, weather and flight-plan updates to e-mail, Internet and phone services. For officials traveling on government aircraft, the service ensures secure and reliable access to information resources on the ground. Commercial and private jet passengers are able to stay in contact through high-speed Internet, e-mail, text messaging and voice connectivity. In addition, pilots using SwiftBroadband by Vizada are able to maintain direct contact with air traffic control and enhance the safety of their passengers and crew members. - MCL, Inc's (Booth #316) MT2300 outdoor TWT amplifier is a low-power, cost-effective, reliable solution that will meet any satellite uplinking requirement. Weighing less than 32 lbs., the MT2300 TWTA is available for Ku-Band applications (13.75-14.50GHz) at 125 or 200W, or Ka-Band applications (27.5-31.0GHz) at 40/100 PK, 70/150 PK, 70/180 PK. The MT2300 is designed to meet MIL-188-164A, and features an extensive diagnostic capability, along with continuous attenuator adjustment in dB and auto power control and status. - TEMBO(R) Reflectors provide Higher Frequency and Larger Aperture Satellite Capabilities. CTD's (Booth #1202) TEMBO(R) antenna reflector technology can provide high frequency performance and more than triple the available aperture on a given satellite. The shape memory characteristics of the TEMBO(R) elastic memory composite (EMC) materials enable the high frequency performance expected from composite solid surface composite reflectors in a low cost, deployable antenna system. - dBm Corporation's (Booth #324) Model SLE700 satellite link emulator. The SLE700 can accommodate the needs of next-generation military and commercial communication satellites that process signals at very high data rates. Satellite payload developers must evaluate how the communications hardware will perform during service. A wide array of characteristics, including propagation delay, fading, Doppler shift, and phase shift must be induced at precise levels and times to accurately mimic the conditions that occur as a satellite changes its position in the sky. The Model SLE700 provides the transmission path and signal impairments required to make these measurements and is typically embedded in a large closed-loop automated test system that performs hundreds of such tests. - Micronetics (Booth #268) CNG70/140-L has been enhanced with many enhanced features including an easy to use calibration menu. This allows the traveling calibration lab to come to remote satellite teleports rather than requiring the equipment to go back to the factory or specialized calibration facility. Now teleports need only one Eb/No generator to support 70, 140 and L-Band modems and calibration can be performed on the same schedule as routine equipment such as spectrum analyzers and oscilloscopes. - The new ICS-400 Iridium (Booth #287) Communications System is designed to provide a standalone comprehensive suite of global voice and data services with connectivity to other aircraft systems. The ICS-400 incorporates four Iridium transceivers and an internal cabin telecommunications unit (CTU). It provides the full range of CTU functions, including intercom calling, call transfer, conferencing, follow-on dialing and voice prompts, using standard dialing conventions and familiar call-progress tones. It also includes ARINC-429 connections and a dedicated short-burst data (SBD) modem for ACARS/AFIS services, and a built-in GPS to support automatic flight following (AFF). - Symmetricom, Inc's (Booth #259) 4370A DVB Sync Source is a high performance, flexible and highly reliable timing system designed for Single Frequency Network (SFN) synchronization for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) applications. DVB/DAB require a precision time and frequency reference to synchronize transmitters across multiple locations. Without synchronization, networks are not able to reliably deliver video and audio content to the end user. - MITEQ's (Booth #316) new Switchable Band Test Loop Translator product line. These units are designed to translate the C-, X- and Ku-Band transmit bands to their respective receive frequency bands. The units feature minimum amplitude and delay distortion, high frequency stability, low intermodulation and phase noise contribution. The units are available with 10/100 Base-T Ethernet and RS485/422 remote interfaces. This unit series replaces the 8600 series of Switchable Band Test Loop Translators.

"SATELLITE 2008 is known as the venue where new products to the satellite communications marketplace are unveiled to the community for the first time," said Joe Rosone, Access Intelligence Satellite Group vice president and group publisher.
