Cuyahoga Falls Brings City Services Online With the IBM iSeries and Linux

Residents of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio Will Be Able to Pay Utility Bills and Access Other City Services Online This Year With the Hel

BOSTON, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/15/05 -- LINUXWORLD -- IBM today announced that the City of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio is using the ultra-reliable IBM eServer iSeries server running Linux and IBM WebSphere software to provide its residents with new online city services.

By simplifying its IT environment and moving some services online, the City will reduce the costs of administration, allowing it to invest those saved resources in additional programs for its residents. For example, the City's local businesses and nearly 50,000 residents are now able to use its enhanced website, Cuyahoga Falls Online (CFO), to enter income tax information and generate a City of Cuyahoga Falls Income Tax return for the April 15th deadline. Additionally, the City will use the iSeries server as the foundation for building other online services -- connected by WebSphere software -- coming in 2005, including: the ability to view and pay utility bills; apply, pay for and view building permits; schedule inspections; purchase passes for its aquatic center; make reservations and enroll in classes at the City's recreational facilities; and reserve tee times at a local golf course.

"With the City's business development and residential population growing significantly over the last five years, it was important to choose a solution that could continue to extend important services reliably and quickly at a low cost," says John Konich, manager of Information Systems for the City of Cuyahoga Falls. "The iSeries server has always delivered value for us and with the option of running multiple operating systems -- specifically adding Linux -- the new iSeries server provided unmatched benefits. We are confident in our choice as we roll out these additional real-time services for our residents in 2005."

A long-time iSeries customer, the City, working with its IBM business partner Berbee Information Networks, added to its iSeries infrastructure by purchasing the newest generation of the IBM iSeries server -- the eServer i5 550 server, in late 2004 because of the following differentiators:

-- Since launching an iSeries server in the early 1990s, the City has
reported negligible downtime due to its IT network.
-- The platform offer great security protection such as IDS (Intrusion
Detection System), which is a critical reason why small and mid-size
organizations, like Cuyahoga Falls, rely on the platform to deliver, in
some cases, sensitive services and offerings to its constituents.
-- The new i5 550 server simplified the City's IT environment by
integrating software such as Tivoli Access Manager and WebSphere 5.02
across diverse operating system, i5/OS and Linux SUSE v.9. The iSeries
system comes with integrated hardware and applications-related software.
The server can run multiple operating systems simultaneously -- i5/OS, AIX
5L, Linux on POWER, and Microsoft Windows (via an Integrated xSeries Server
    or an Integrated xSeries Adapter).

IBM Tivoli Access Manager for Operating Systems will bring a high level of security for the newly simplified IT environment. The software securely locks down applications, files on UNIX and Linux operating platforms to help prevent unauthorized access. This security capability blocks both insiders and outsiders from unauthorized access to and use of valuable and personal data.

"Like other leading city and state governments, The City of Cuyahoga Falls has brought Linux to its 'Main Street' to easily deliver necessary services to residents," says Peter Bingaman, vice president, IBM eServer iSeries. "The iSeries platform running Linux has allowed the City of Cuyahoga Falls to reduce their IT costs and funnel some of those savings into creating other online services that are valuable to the community. IBM is pleased to provide such beneficial solutions to customers including government entities in the U.S. and around the world."

Software for the new CFO system is provided by SunGard HTE Inc. and Vermont Systems. SunGard HTE's community development and utility billing software gives local businesses and residents the ability to view and pay utility bills; apply, pay for and view building permits; and schedule inspections.

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio was founded in 1812. Cuyahoga Falls Online services are accessible through www.cityofcf.com.

About the IBM eServer iSeries

The world's most popular server for mid-size business operations, the IBM iSeries holds the IT industry's largest install base for midrange servers. In May 2004, IBM introduced the POWER5 processor for the first time on the iSeries platform, with the eServer i5 server. The iSeries system starts at a single processor and scales up to a 64-way processor and offers customers super-integration and hardware compatibility simplifying operations. The iSeries powers thousands of the world's most popular business applications while running multiple operating environments, simultaneously reducing the cost of IT environments so companies can reinvest in growth.

Most organizations are awash today in data and IT systems, yet they're still struggling mightily to use these invaluable assets to meet the rising demand for new digital solutions and customer experiences that drive innovation and growth. What's lacking are potent and effective ways to rapidly combine together on-premises IT and the numerous commercial clouds that the average organization has in place today into effective new business solutions.
Keeping an application running at scale can be a daunting task. When do you need to add more capacity? Larger databases? Additional servers? These questions get harder as the complexity of your application grows. Microservice based architectures and cloud-based dynamic infrastructures are technologies that help you keep your application running with high availability, even during times of extreme scaling. But real cloud success, at scale, requires much more than a basic lift-and-shift migrati...

When applications are hosted on servers, they produce immense quantities of logging data. Quality engineers should verify that apps are producing log data that is existent, correct, consumable, and complete. Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly.
