Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Data Domain Expands Nearline Storage Virtualization Partnerships
Integration With New Partners Extends Archiving and File Virtualization Uses With Data Domain

By: Virtualization News
Aug. 4, 2008 09:30 AM

Data Domain announced partnerships with archiving and file virtualization providers, further extending the implementation options available to users wishing to leverage Data Domain's nearline storage capabilities. Data Domain systems can now be used with Mimosa Nearpoint; AXS-One Compliance Platform; F5 Networks Acopia ARX File Virtualization devices; Brocade File Management Engine (FME); DataGlobal Enterprise Resource Suite (ERS); ARKIVIO auto-stor and Kazeon Information Server.

The new partnerships underscore the inherent flexibility of Data Domain deduplication storage systems when applied as a storage tier for nearline file storage, backup, disaster recovery as well as long term retention of enterprise data for reference, litigation support and regulatory compliance. Data Domain's nearline storage capabilities, combined with partner products, enable customers to minimize the space and storage capacity required for disk-based archives, while reducing the amount of time spent searching, indexing and recovering files from archived data sets. These latest partners join a list of previously announced Data Domain certified archiving partners that includes CommVault, EMC, Symantec, and Atempo.

"It is becoming clear that fast deduplication can help shrink and simplify the storage for active archiving and other nearline applications," said Brian Biles, Vice President of Product Management at Data Domain. "Since Data Domain is the leading vendor to offer inline deduplication storage for nearline use, we are excited to be partnering with key application vendors in these markets to create combined solutions for our customers."

Partner Statements
"We are excited to be part of this partnership with Data Domain," says Giovanni Paliska, General Manager of Arkivio. "Their customers will benefit from the inclusion of so many great archiving and file virtualization products in their nearline storage offerings, and we are proud to have been selected to be part of their offering."

"AXS-One has completed extensive benchmarking of the AXS-One Compliance Platform(TM) with Data Domain systems," said Marie-Charlotte Patterson, Vice President of Product Management and Corporate Marketing at AXS-One. "We are very pleased with the near-line de-duplication results that we have achieved and are confident of the capacity optimization for long-term data storage this can offer our enterprise customers. As the leading provider of high performance archival, e-discovery and electronic records management software solutions, our customers are looking for ways to manage growing volumes of e-mail and other electronic record types, while reducing infrastructure costs and supporting Green IT initiatives. Our partnership with Data Domain further strengthens our ability to address those requirements."

"Brocade customers are demanding solutions to control file data growth and contain costs, without disruption to the end user," said Truls Myklebust, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Brocade. "The combined Brocade FME and Data Domain solution maximizes the value of a tiered storage infrastructure, combining intelligent file management and de-duplication with cost-effective nearline storage."

"More than ever organizations are looking to save costs and maximize their storage investment through technologies like deduplication," said Nigel Burmeister, Director of Product Marketing at F5. "F5 Networks Acopia ARX File Virtualization devices make it easier for customers to realize these benefits by dramatically simplifying the deployment of Data Domain systems in a heterogeneous file storage environment. The ARX's automated tiering policies seamlessly move data between storage tiers, enabling organizations to realize all the benefits of deduplication rapidly, without disruption to the existing environment."

"Kazeon's Information Access & Management Platform provides file archival, data migration, data retention and eDiscovery capabilities, allowing customers to benefit from the policy-based, automatic and continuous migration of data between primary and nearline storage tiers for optimization or eDiscovery reasons," said Karthik Kannan, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Kazeon. "In addition, Kazeon can set meta-data or content-based policies to automatically identify and move content into Data Domain's secure WORM volumes and automatically set retention policy by interacting with Data Domain's Retention Lock software option. Kazeon can also provide unique, policy-based content tagging and create virtual folders for easier tracking and management of nearline data."

"We are excited to leverage Data Domain's deduplication technologies to improve storage efficiencies for content being managed by the Mimosa NearPoint archive as the repository of record to expedite eDiscovery and automate the recovery of Microsoft Exchange," said Scott Whitney, vice president product management, Mimosa Systems.
