ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Building on its lead as the country's largest full-line sporting goods retailer, Sports Authority will formally open 11 new stores in eight different states Saturday, August 16, it was announced today by Greg Waters, chief operating officer of the Colorado-based company.

The new stores, each averaging more than 40,000 square-feet in size, will debut in Omaha (2 new stores), Kansas City, Tucson, Phoenix, Austin, Hiram (GA), Gainesville (VA.), Rockwall (TX), Fort Collins (CO) and Amherst (NH).

The grand openings will bring the total number of Sports Authority retail outlets to 441 nationwide. This year alone, Sports Authority plans on opening a total of 37 new stores throughout the country.

The new stores, similar to all Sports Authority locations, will offer the combination of top-line brands, broad product selection, knowledgeable sales staff and competitively low prices that has become the hallmark of the chain's operations. Each will be tailored to the myriad interests of area shoppers, and will feature dedicated sections for footwear, apparel, winter sports, golf and fitness.

"Our goal is to be aggressive in meeting the need and demand for our products and services throughout this country," said David Campisi, president of Sports Authority. "We have already established ourselves as the pre-eminent sporting goods retailer in these markets, and the growth opportunity continues to be attractive. We're excited about expanding our footprint and look forward to success in every one of these stores."
