(Sugar Land, Texas) -- In addition to the earlier proposed ultra-mega power
projects (UMPP) in the country, India plans to set up three more and has
already identified and finalized sites in the states of Maharashtra, Orissa
and Tamil Nadu. The additional UMPPs will be set up in Munge, Sindhudurg,
in Maharashtra; Bedabahal, Sundargarh, in Orissa; and Cheyyur Kanchipuram,
in Tamil Nadu. The government had initially proposed to set up 10 4,000-MW
UMPPs in the country. Tata Power Company Limited (BOM:500400) (Mumbai) is
setting up a UMPP in Gujarat, while Reliance Power Limited (BOM:532939)
(Mumbai) has secured contracts to set up UMPPs in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra
Pradesh. A bidding process for the development of a UMPP in Jharkhand, is
slated to begin this year. Eleven companies have been shortlisted in the
bidding process, including The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES) (Arlington,
Virginia) and Sterlite Industries India Limited (NYSE: SLT) (Tuticorin,
Tamil Nadu).
