Yahoo and Intel have partnered to go into the widget business together and create a web-enabled interactive TV channel populated with picture-in-a-picture RIA widgetry like Flickr, Blockbuster, Twitter, e-mail, Yahoo Finance, eBay auctions, news and sports.
The technology on Yahoo’s side is based on its Widget Engine, which reads JavaScript, XML, HTML and Flash.
Intel is kicking in a new system on a chip designated the Media Processor CE 3100 (a k a Canmore) targeted at CE devices such as set-top boxes and digital TVs.
One can expect the mojo on Comcast, Showtime and MTV next year. Intel and Yahoo will make an SDK available and a publishing apparatus called Widget Galley.
Intel reckons the consumer marketplace will be worth $10 billion by 2011. Canmore starts shipping in September.
