PITTSBURGH, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "We are united with the
Democrats behind the Obama-Biden presidential campaign to change America,"
declared Leo W. Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers (USW) after
Obama's nationally televised acceptance speech. "It's high time to return our
government to hard working families."
After joining hundreds of Steelworkers Union families in Warren, OH at an
outdoor amphitheater set up to watch Obama's live speech broadcast from
Denver, Gerard said: "We owe it to ourselves and our families to go out and do
everything we can to make sure the Obama-Biden Democratic campaign wins in
November."
Gerard said, "Obama's acceptance speech made a forceful case for change,
calling on working Americans to join him in fighting for a better life for our
children, grandchildren and all the rest of us. The separate paths Obama and
Biden have each followed to reach this historic nomination for America's
Democratic presidential ticket is familiar to Steelworkers who have struggled
too. The Obama-Biden election fight for the White House is our fight.
"Senator Obama especially speaks to workers by his plan for sweeping
change to our health care system, his unflinching support for Employee Free
Choice to support the right of workers for strong unions, and his insistence
that America's trade policies must, first and foremost, serve the interests of
America's working families."
The USW president said Obama rejects the Bush-McCain approach to economics
that only leads to more jobs losses, lower incomes for middle-class Americans,
more off-shoring of jobs and shattered dreams.
USW members registered hundreds of 'Barack the Vote' parties in industrial
neighborhoods and union halls all across the country to watch the TV broadcast
of the Democratic candidate make his historic acceptance speech.
