OK, so what does VMware CEO Paul Maritz, a guy who thanks to Microsoft doesn’t have to work and could be in Africa saving animals, have to gain by jumping back in the trenches this time to take on the company that made him rich?

Well, according to a VMware filing with the SEC he’s getting a base salary of $750,000 a year with a pro-rated target bonus of $750,000 plus an option to buy a million VMware shares at an exercise price of $33.95 and currently underwater.

He’s got time to raise the stock price, however.

A quarter of the stock options vest next September 10, and the remaining shares vest in equal monthly installments over the following three years.
